This summer Im going into a mass building diet. I need help with my diet though. I was considering getting 300 grams of protein a day and I way 204 lbs. I need to know if this is a little too much and need help in making the rest of my diet (no fish please). Ive never been on a diet before so Im hoping Ill make a lot of gains over the summer. Thanks to anyone that replies

If you are lifting heavy then I don't really see any problem with 300 total grams per day. If you eat an 8 ounce hamburger patty then you're getting roughly 45 grams of protein. So it may take a bit of guesswork at the start, but you'll see that after a normal day of eating meat with every meal that you should be okay drinking 100 grams of protein in your shakes. You could even go lower than that without a lot of harm. I've found that rather than drinking 2-50 grams of protein shakes per day that if I drink 3 25 grams of protein shakes per day that I feel the same results. During my mass building phases I actually go even higher than that, but you definitely want to read a good book on bodybuilding nutrition before using that much protein. But at around 300 grams per day you'll be okay. Be sure to drink lots of water.

Man I love eating a lot of protein, and one good thing about it is, most people will not get fat from eating too much. I have never really seen anyone get fat from eating too much, at least I don't. If you are gonna overdue a macronutrient, protein would definately be the one to choose. My two cents.

If one is involved in a high intensity weight program they need to intake 1.76 g of protein per kg of bodyweight. That'll give you gains.

As for your answer, your taking way too much. It won't harm you but it'll get stored in the form of fat.

In your case you'd do this
204lbs = 92.5 kgs
so...92.5 x 1.76 = 162.8
So all the protein you need is 163 grams per day!! No more, no less.

And in case you didn't realize this includes the protein that you get outta your meals also.

I thought it was 1.5 g per pound of bodyweight not kg of bodyweight...

It's 1 to 1.5 gm per pound of lean body mass.
You will not get fat from eatting to much protien I don't know why people say that.
For your weight 204lbs lets say 185lbs is LBM then
185x1=185gm
185x1.5=278gm
ethertex is talking about what is the normal intake for the average American. Not the average BB.

Actually, I believe that ethertek is making refence to a study published by Dr. Peter Lemon. Dr. Lemon is regarded by most as the authority on protein, and he believes that an athlete only requires ~1.7 grams of protein per kg of bodyweight. We lifters have always felt that more protein is needed, but studies seem to indicate that this is not the case. A little bit of extra protein, however, is not going to harm you. It just might not be needed.

I weigh 200 lbs and get 300-350 grams per day. This may be a little bit much, but have a fast metabolism and have found that if I lower my protein intake, I lose size and strength. So I would rather get too much than too little. I just make sure I drink a ton of water to flush the kidneys.

Ethertek's formula is similar to Dr. Peter Lemon's research, which is far above the RDA for normal sedentary individuals (0.8g/kg BW). I don't believe that people need 1-2g/LB of BW, if they use a good amount of the omega-3 fatty acids (flax, fis oil, etc.) and even the better polyunsat. fats such as canola, high oleic soy oil, macadamia nut oil, etc., since these oils allow for better utilization of amino acids for repair and growth. Duchaine even recommended this approach, and claimed to have helped some pros gain weight after a period of no growth while they used super high protein intakes.

If one is still of the fat-phobic mindset, then very high protein intakes will benefit, since they require more protein to compensate for the increase in protein oxidation that will occur.
