Hey man, I went out and got Alpha Lipoic Acid today by Twinlab. Its only 50 mgs a pill, and says to take 1 per day. In an earler post you said you were taking 250mgs 3 times per day right? Did i not buy powerful enough stuff or what? What kind do you get? Thanks, Gare IP: Logged |

Eas has a product called Cla it has 1000mg of safflower oil per capsule. Which comes out to about 100mg per capsule of linolec acid. You can use anywhere between 300mg - 600mg / day. IP: Logged |

Sabes, all the studies on the effectiveness of Alpha Lipoic Acid show that it takes 600 mg a day to get the desired effect. Taking more or less will not help except as an antioxidant. Did you buy it at GNC? If you did see if you can take it back for a refund (if you have a receipt) or else get store credit. You'll need to be taking at least 200 mg (3 times a day) or what I do, which is 300 mg twice a day. Don't take the CLA for the same reason as ALA. CLA is composed of omega fatty acids. ALA is derived from something different. The names sound the same but they're not. I like the Jarrow brand of ALA that I get at http://www.dpsnutrition.com The reason the bottle tells you to take 50 mg per day is that this is the recommended dose if you only want to take it as an antioxidant. However, if you want it to do what it is best at doing then you need to bump up the dose to 600 mg per day. By the way, here's a quick list of things that ALA does: I've been using it for several months now. It has helped me maintain my current fat levels and keep my blood sugar stabilized. A couple of things first though, don't take it if you are diabetic without telling your doctor first. Also, you want to be sure to take the ALA WITH MEALS containing carbs, since otherwise could lower your blood sugar and cause some problems. Try that web address and then look over at the left margin that lists all the companies. Then scroll down until you see the brand Jarrow. Click on it and it will tell you about it. Good luck and I hope that helps. IP: Logged |

BackDoc is SO right. I started using ALA because my whole family is diabetic and I was getting pre-diabetic myself. You need at least 900 MG daily (in 3 divided doses) to get the effect you want, and if you're eating enormous amounts of food, I'd go even higher than that. Remember that, very often, recommended doages are purposefully low because companies know people will take much more anyway, and it's good protection against litigation. If you think ALA is too expensive, consider the fact that it: Modulates insulin and glucagon activity This makes it more versatile and more healthy than Glucophage, which in my experience, only SEEMS more powerful because the average dose is 850 MG. But take 900 MG of ALA all at once, and the next day, take 900 MG of Glucophage all at once, and you'll see that ALA is the winner. It's a basic, just like creatine, glutamine, and flax. IP: Logged |

Backdoc, please give references to your following claims: "2)if your body is low in vitamin C or vitamin E ALA will help produce those vitamins." The concept of a vitamin is that the body cannot synthesize it, therefore must be received through the diet. I can see the idea that ALA may "spare" these two vitamins, but make them? I am interested. "3)lowers your blood sugar by way of mimicking the action of insulin (it carries blood sugar to muscles, not to fat areas)" I have seen the studies on ALA's glucose lowering effects and it has been shown to increase non-insulin dependant glucose transporters, but I have seen no studies showing preference to skeletal muscle over adipocytes. I would assume that this occurs in both tissue types. I am interested in this info. IP: Logged |

You can find this information in a few different places, but the source that is most concise and in an easy to find format is in The Supplement Bible by Dr. Earl Mindell...which is in most libraries or bookstores. See page 87-89 for the detailed info. It's a great book and has so much valuable information that I think it's a must have for anyone using supplements. If you need the research references then I can provide that too, although that's going to take quite a bit of time, since I've collected a rather extensive amount of information on this product. If you want, I can find the publishing company that prints a booklet on alpha lipoic acid that goes extensively into detail as to the specific chemical and physiological properties of ALA. (It's about 50 pages and is only about 5 bucks...a bookstore could order it or a medical or pharmacy library would most likely have it). Just let me know. IP: Logged |
