I see no harm in drinking skim milk on a diet
mainly used for protein shakes but I once read that you should avoid all dairy, including skim milk, when on a diet. Is this true? I hope not.

My nutritionist says 8-10 oz. a day is ok, but optional. It does tend to make me bloated though.

I think a lot rumors regarding milk being bad for dieting stems back to them drinking the 2% to whole milk versions. I have never seen anyone have problems with skim milk. I have also never seen any bad reports with 1% milk, so I think you will be fine. If the lactose is a problem, just buy the lactose free milk.

The thing you want to be aware of is that allergies to milk are pretty common. I'm not talking about lactose intolerance, I'm talking about an allergic response to the proteins in milk. When you think about it, it should be no surprise that we could have an allergy to the bodily secretions of another species. The problem with the most common 3 food allergies (milk, corn and wheat) is that sometimes we don't know if we are allergic to the stuff, since many allergies may not even have visible clinical signs. In some cases, I've seen where an allergy to corn products caused irritable bowels 3 days after eating it! So the first thought she had was "what did I eat today that made me feel sick?" when all along it was the corn she had 3 days earlier! Get a food allergy test taken if you are concerned about this. It's a great investment for your future health.
Here's just a little bit of trivia: hippocrates and other physicians centuries ago said that they felt almost all chronic diseases began in the digestive tract. We are seeing that reality today with all the junk we are eating as a society.
Take it easy.
