I've been dieting for 3 weeks now and am making good progress. Every magazine and bodybuilding video I see shows white rice being eaten as part of a contest diet. I just watched a Craig Titus video and he was 7 days out from his contest and chowing down white rice and chicken breasts. I would like to switch from Yams to white rice for a change, but isn't white rice too starchy and refined? Also, what are some other good low glycemic carbs to eat? thanks very much!!

change the white rice to brown rice. only WHOLE grain oats....all the time for me...except when bulking, when id eat anything. However, my preference for brown rice and whole grains is always higher. oatmeal, brown rice, yams....all is good.

most popular meal for pros about 10 years ago was white rice and chicken breasts fried in olive oil. my guess is the glycemic index of the carbs isn't as important when eating 6-8 times a day and using androgenic steriods. you'll have to be smarter about it though, whole wheat breads, whole wheat pasta, just "whole" everything. try and stay away from too many refined foods. Yams would be great. ------------------

White rice, brown rice, there both good. Bread avoid it, unless its gluten free. Dont worry about the GI of foods, it doesnt matter if there eaten with different macronutrients. What does matter is the nutrient value of them.

I would stick w/ the yams, just for ease of measurement and the GI.

I've heard a lot about eating whole wheat, etc. The other day I was comparing whole wheat bread to white bread. Besides having more fiber, the wheat bread also had about 30% more calories and more carbs as well. I went with the white bread. I'm watching weight as well but I don't see the benefit of using the whole wheat bread.

"White" anything as opposed to "whole" should not be consumed while trying cut up or lose weight. These foods are more starchy and much less complex than oatmeal, whole bread, and most vegetables. The reason you want to avoid these is because the body digests these "white" foods much more rapidly (almost like a sugar). They break down very quickly which leads to higher and quicker releases of insulin into the bloodstream. Insulin is severely anabolic, which is great if you're trying to put on muscle, but it also leads to lipogenesis (the storage of intercellular bodyfat). It's why sugar diabetics are constantly craving sweets...they're bodies are looking for a realease of insulin but they do not produce enough insulin to counteract what sugars they do digest...hence they overeat carbs and sugary foods in an attempt to raise insulin levels. It's the same idea behind low-carb diets. Insulin levels bottom out and fat-storage and maintenance comes screeching to a halt. But if you're not into ketosis (extremely low or no carbs) then choose the complex carbs to minimize the fat-storing effects of insulin. Hope I helped. ------------------ |
