I was thinking of doing the Ketogenic diet for a month or so. Just a few questions. How many of you are succesful at keeping the fat loss off? I've heard so many stories about people just gaining the fat back once they stop.. and that any losses are mostly water. Also, how long after you stop the diet does your body return to normal, without feeling bloated? | ||

The rebound effect is a bunch of horse shit if you ask me. Any time you quit dieting for fat loss, you will gain back a certain amount of fat and water retention. I think the belief that one will gain back "more" fat when quiting a keto diet is simply based on false facts and misunderstanding the condition that the body is in when quiting. When following a keto diet, the body is usually depleted of both water and glycogen. It is not unheard of for someone to gain around 15 pounds of weight over a 48 hour carb-up to replenish these depletions. To many which quit a keto diet, this is usually the same effect that takes place. I believe it is those "layman" dieters (like my parents) that follow the diet for a few weeks and are not into bodybuilding that are responsible for this "horse shit". The rapid increase of weight due to water and glycogen triggers them to think that they are gaining back unwanted weight faster than they normally would. I will agree that when coming off a keto diet you will want to eat every carb in sight, but this is usually the case after any diet. This is the dieters failure and not the diet (keto). It should also be said that anyone I have known, including myself, that follows any kind of hypocaloric diet (low calorie carb diet) will want to binge after completion of their dieting goals. Therefore, you basically get the same effect, but since a non-keto diet usually will not get the dieter into extreme depletion levels like a keto diet (both glycogen and water) the weight gain will not be as extreme/instant. Will you gain more weight due to glycogen and water gain on a keto diet? YES. Will the fat gain after a keto diet be greater? NO, at least not in my mind any more than you would from any other diet. |
