What are your favorite fat burning cardio exercises. Do you agree with the ultra intense, short burst, high calorie burn aspect or the slow, low heart rate, long approach? -Late-

I like a mix of the two. You should always mix up your cardio routine. Go 15 minutes on one machine and then switch to another. Your body adapts so it is good to mix things up to get better results. Do high intense for a few days and then low intensity for longer periods of time for a few days. Take your body as far as you feel you can go, really push yourself.

I like to mix the 2 also. I take a moderate/slow walk for a mile once a week and I do my strongman lifts usually once-twice a week. Those lifts include: tire flip, sled pull, grip work. B True

I like to hammer out 10 to 20minutes of intervals [usually 30 sec fast/30 sec slow] first thing in the mourning about four times a week, and the slow stuff in the evening if I really need to.

I too like mixing them up. I only do cardio upon waking. I prefer to run outside if the weather permits but otherwise it's on a stationary bike. I always build up slowly for the first 5 minutes then pick up the pace and throw in bursts every few minutes for as long as I can. 3 days a week max for me. This is also the only time I ever use a thermogenic and from my experience it has worked great.

I just do whatever gets my HR to 70-80% of my max, and do that for 30 minutes, I don't think the body cares what type of cardio it is as long as your doing it. ------------------

Treadmill at 15 degrees and 10 mph for 15 minutes gets me really cut. High intensity aerobics burns a smaller percentage of calories from fat, but still burns more calories overall.

Well, you have to schools of thought on this subject. Some say do low intensity, long duration and others advocate short, high intensity exercise. By definition, short and intense activities cannot be aerobic because the amount of energy needed to sustain these types of exercises cannot be obtained from aerobic pathways. True, they burn more total calories, but you are doing more work, hence the need for more energy. When you do intense cardio, the body cannot breakdown fatty tissue fast enough to supply the energy it needs, so the body resorts to blood glucose and muscle proteins. This isn't something that I would want to do if I was trying to preserve muscle tissue while losing fat. Doing lower intensity, longer duration aerobic activity maximizes your body's ability to utilize stored fat as its primary energy source. True, you don't burn as many calories, but you also do not burn hardly any muscle protein either. This is the ultimate goal. -TG

If you use treadmill, it should have some different options. I know the ones I use have.. don't remember the name but it goes flat for a while, then suddenly inlines for a short period, then back to flat, and so on. It's good because you don't have to keep watching the time and adjusting the speed and inlcine yourself.

Hmmmm It's not just a matter of controversy, but 'horses for courses'. It is now pretty much acknowledged as 'fact' that some people are born with more fast twitch muscle, other more slow twitch, and others in between. From a practical point of view many people like to point to the physiques of good 100 meter sprinters and say this 'proves' that short, intense intervals lead to maximum leanness with minimum muscle loss (when these sprinters may well have been born to excel at sprinting and resond really well to this type of training). Others point to marathon runners and use this as ther proof that endurance, lower intensity cardio will lead to muscle loss (when they may have merely been born with more slow twitch muscle and therefore excel at marathons). Ultimately you have to find out what suits you best (trial and error). It is far more likely that the aerobic exercise that works best for you will have as much to do with your genetics, diet and weight training style as it does to do with the actual intensity or duration of your aerobics. Personally, I have found that high intensity short bursts worked better for me when I was younger, but now the longer, moderate aerobic activities help me to stay lean.

Hey Johnny Iron, Wow we have a lot in common. The only variation is I do cardio for 1 hour twice a week. And 30 minutes of cardio after my 4 muscle days (1 whole day off per week). On the 30 minute runs I do staight low level cardio, while on the two cardio specific days I start the hour with a 5 minute warm up followed by exact 2 minute sprint/rest cycles. On the bike I do level 6 @130RMP for sprint, and level 5 90RPM for rest. It makes an hour of cardio more run, and the bike sounds like a huge turbine around 130RPM so it's kinda fun... :^) I like lots of little goals so I can see completion, and an hour feels long. So for each 2 minute sprint I try to max out. That way I know I have a short time, followed by a rest. Keeping time specific and not winging it helps me better understand how I am progressing. By keeping days the same I can measure progress. Then after a month or so switch things up and keep it interesting :^)

- tg unless you are malnourished..there is no reason your body will use muscle proteins for fuel to great extent...just fuels the sprinters are more bulky than marathoners debate...under your thoughts marathoners would be ripped without muscle loss and sprinters would be lanky with muscle loss

Think about the elite sports in the world and think about their bodies. No brainer if you are a "real athlete and you don't mind pain, do sprints. Go to a track, do 10 100m dashes 15sec. each 1-1:30 rest in between. USe this for starters, 3-4 times a week. Trust me I play college ball at a big time school.

Rowing is one of the best forms of cardio and gives you a total body workout. It's also no impact. But many people don't stick with the rowing because, quite frankly, it's very hard work compared to something like a treadmill or stationery bike.

I have to agree with TG; lower intensity, say on the treadmill, will tap into your fat stores rather than muscle, the ultimate goal in bodybuilding; however, I do believe, as some others expressed, that you will need to mix intensity level in order to keep your body in top shape - you have to shock your body a bit - if you do the same thing all the time, you will hit a plateau. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish, as well as what is necessary for YOUR body - we are all different and our bodies react differently, so you may have to experiment for yourself - I can tell you that you do not want to be doing high-intensity cardio for long periods of time, for days or weeks on end - you will only end up losing alot of muscle.

I do three forms of cardio on cardio days-on one or maybe two days a week for 45 minutes I do 15 minute segments on three different machines- rowing, stairmaster,EFX or treadmill, bike, stairclimber. Then mix them up everytime. seems to keep my body reacting like new without stripping off muscle. |
