I would avoid aspartame/nutrasweet completely. There seems to be a lot of controversy over the safety of this product. However, I lean toward the "probably unsafe" category, and here's why: one of the smartest people I ever knew was a chemistry professor of mine who eventually was invited to work for the national defense department. He was truly supra-genius level intelligence. We got into a debate one day in class over aspartame and he drew the chemical formula on the board and explained in detail how it breaks down in the body into methanol (wood alcohol) which is extremely toxic to nerves (this is why people who drink methanol go blind and insane). I didn't think much about it at the time, but later a commercial pilot buddy of mine told me that they have a flight safety manual that they all have to read during training...and that it said in one part that all pilots should not consume aspartame/nutrasweet products within 24 hours of flight departure for the risks associated with seizures.

Ever since then, I've tried to avoid it.

Acesulfame K, in my opinion, seems to be somewhat safer. So is Sucralose (Splenda). Diet drinks containing this include Diet Rite Soda, which doesn't taste too awful.

I've heard diet soda is no good to you because of the acid and the phosophorus in it. I think it hinders circulation to the muscles. Anyone know more?

I have heard many times that soda is horrible, because of sugar, CO2 (waste product), and phosphorus. Yet I have no idea why, and I even fucking asked JEEVES... haha?

I read a study stating that Nutrasweet/aspartame suppresses the thyroid gland. Thus making overweight people with sluggish thyroids even more overweight.

If you want to check out a website devoted to uncovering the truth about aspartame/nutrasweet, then go to
www.dorway.com

it also says that the other artificial sweeteners are bad, but hey, so is sugar!
I've seen people with nervousness, insomnia, mood swings, attention deficit problems and even poor memory get better when they cut out the sugar.
So I guess it's a matter of choosing the lesser of the evils.

Hey BacDoc,

Nice call. I also believe it is a lesser of two evils match-up.

From my expereince staying away from sugar has been very benefitical to my training.

I also prefer the flavor of sweet&low over granulated sugar anyday. I dropped soda and save $$$ at the store and restaurants.

I pretty much try to stick to water for my drinking (and beer hehehe). The majority of the artifical sweeteners in my diet are in my MRPs or protein bars.

Since many fruits like apples produce methanol as a byproduct, should we avoid these too? Also, why are people who eat these fruits that have methanol as a byproduct not experiencing these same life threatening effects? I've never heard of these effects occuring in any kind of vegetarian diet that is full of fruits.

Don't know if this helps any, but, after about 20 years, the FDA has taken saccharan <sp?> OFF the list of known carcinogens. They stated that, while it does cause cancerous tumors in lab rats, it does not demonstrate the same effect on humans. So, you might not want to run out and start sucking down the artificial sweeteners just yet, but it is, I would think, good news.

Touche MR BMJ.

All I would like to add is 'all things in moderation'. Too much of any artificial sweetener is not a good idea, nor is too much sugar, fruit or alcohol. A better idea is to get your sweet tooth under control (you'll be better off long term) and use the sweeteners as a special treat for achieving a fitness or fatloss goal. This, IMHO, is true whether you're dieting OR bulking.

Just read this post. There's some other good info. about it in the archives.

This is a scary topic I think. After all, we're all trying to take care of our bodies and eat/exercise right. We all want to live long, healthy lives.

I always learn something when I read articles about artif. sweeteners, etc.

I guess either not using/eating it or doing so in moderation is the key.

BTW, thanks BackDoc for the website. I'm going to check it out.
