It's my understanding that both should be avoided in large quantities but that margarine is a foriegn chemical to the body that is impossible (or difficult?) to process. Butter on the other hand is recognized and very digestable yet contains alot of saturated fat. so this is my "proposal": any other time of the day use butter lightly if the need arises?? does anyone have anything to say about this? ------------------

Why don't you toast your bread and brush it with olive oil? Curious; why no butter after workout? This interview is over.

toast the bread, NO WAY... olive oil, negative. I forgot to mention that I lightly butter it and put it in the microwave for 12 seconds to get the bread warm. I can eat each piece in 3 bites, and it's very convenient. the reason you should avoid fat post workout is because thier is an effect similar (lower in strength) to that of insulin: macronutrients will be transfered rapidly into the muscles (protein, carbs), or into fat cells (fat). another good reason is that fat will also slow the digestive process, by eliminating it you will be able to replenish lost glycogen faster. you should consume 80-120 grams of carbs after a workout to replenish glycogen stores. carbs are of the first neccesity over protein post workout. I then follow a protein shake or some meat 30 minutes later. ------------------

I like "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter." It's vegetable oil, it's low in saturated fats, but it has good fats. I prefer it over butter and margarine. ------------------ Check out http://pub30.ezboard.com/bhitsgymofbodybuilding -HB-

Butter is better because it contains no hydrogenated vegetable oil.. they thought margarine would be better, but because they have to hydrogenate the oil (so that its a solid), it is a lot worse for you, since hydrogenated vegetable oil is very very bad for you.

Brummles & Brown--part butter, part yogurt and small part veg oil. NO trans-fatty acids.

VAL, both butter and margarine are easily used by the body, yet neither one, taken in high amounts, are healthy. It is true that the PARTIALLY hydrogenated oils contain trans fats, this is not un-natural. Beef contains trans-vaccinic acid, but in small quantities. The problem comes in when one uses ALOT of margarine, then the amounts of trans fats becomes problematic. Butter, being mainly saturated fats, is problematic because sat. fats decrease insulin sensitivity, and are mainly used for fat storage. But this again is in high amounts. I like the SMART BALANCE spread, which uses a decent ratio of omega-3/omega-6 oils with no hydrogenation. Plus it is pretty cheap. And polyunsaturated oils (mainly omega-3's) are shown to improve insulin function.

beware of benecol!! it has natural chemicals (from a tree!) which block the absorbtion of cholesterol or something. but where does all that cholesterol go? in the toilet bowl! it can give you the shits!!! try it but i'd go with an olive oil margerine, or olive oil butter! while i'm here, why is toast bad! i only ask because i eat lots of lightly toasted brown bread

bump...i just wanna find out why toast is bad.., is it cause of the free radicals caused by toasting, or does the toasting somehow affect the carbs?

who said that toast is bad? if you were refering to me "toast it, no way!" that's because I'm consuming like 6-7 pieces of bread at a time, in the microwave for 7 seconds and two-three bites for each piece.

Butter's the only way to go-it's more natural as opposed to the chemically altered margarine.

I thought it was better to get those carbs in liquid form after workout! Because quickly digested, you take full advantage of the window of opportunity and replenish quickly your glycogen stores. I'd heard this drink should contain 3:1 carbs:high BV protein. Then to eat a meal about 1-1.30 h after workout. Does anybody know different than this? ------------------
