I have been wondering if beef (from bulls & cows, pigs etc) is needed on a high protein diet. Because: 40gr of protein comming from beef = 4-6$ (in Denmark) 40gr of protein comming from Tuna = 80cents 30gr protein from fish egs = 1$ 30gr protein from whole egs = 1$ 30gr protein from misc. fish 1-2$ 35gr protein from skimmed milk = 90cents So if protein from beef/steak/pork/misc. animal meat is'nt better than protein from fish/eggs/milk why should you spend money on them? (if you are a poor student). Any opinions ?

I've read that it's important to vary your protein and fat sources. Some sources might be lacking in particular amino acids, vitamins or minerals so you could be missing out on important nurtients by sticking to only the same protein sources. But if you are on a tight budget, I guess you have no choice. I would personally try to vary my protein sources every now and then, but generally stick to the more affordable ones. ------------------

I eat beef(cow) 4 times a week. I think that red meat is good and it contains things that white meats miss ie. certain proteins, vitamins and minerals. Red meat also contains creatine(only a bit). It is good to vary your protein intake from different sources as you are more likely to get all the amino acids required to build muscle.

your bosy needs 20 essential amino acids (building blocks of protein)- this means that you have to eat these 20 as your body cannot synthesise them. All animal sources of protein (i.e. kiling the animal/fish) have these. Any other amino acids can be synthesised by your body. Therefore you can get away with not eating too much red meat, as white meat is cheaper and leaner (i too am a poor student!). Having said that it is good to get red meat everyonce in a while, but i get the main bulk of my protein from, fish and chicken and protein shakes! If your worried that red meat contains vitamins and minerals you need, you can just as easily get them elsewhere- fruit, supplementation, vegatables all contain the vitamins and minerals you'll need. Red meat tends to be over eaten, it can be taken in moderation ! (if you can afford all the time it sure tastes nice, but i'd watch your health [This message has been edited by danielson (edited December 05, 2000).]

I feel personally that red meat is the best for growth. better than any white meat. It's one of those "faith" type things that I can't really explain. maybe it's how it satisfies my hunger so much? red meat also has more B vitamins, and fat than white meat. I like 9% ground beef the best, making southern dishes and mexican. |
