Hey guys, i'm new to this board, at least i haven't been here in a couple years...but i like the diet section on here. I have a question about cutting up..i'll give my details, and then see if y'all can tell me what i'm doing wrong. I'm 6' tall, 197lbs, around 13% bodyfat at the moment. I just started a cycle of deca and test about 3 weeks ago, and can already feel the water retention. Anyways, i started my diet around
2 weeks ago, and lost 3 lbs the first week. I was eating around 2600 calories a day, which i thought was about right for me considering i have a slow metabolism...well, this week i look like absolute shit..i get up on MWF and do 30 min of cardio, and work out hard...but it seems i've actually gained fat this week! That makes no sense to me...i've had this problem in the past because i've cut cals. too much, but 2600 doesn't seem like too few. I'm eating very clean, with 300g protein, 70g fat, and 190 g of carbs on workout days...on non workout days, the carbs are reduced to around 90 g or so. I've lost around 40 pounds in the past couple of years, but now have that little layer of flabby fat on me which i think looks worse than being REALLY fat for some reason...
Anyways, i was just wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions for me. i've got about 11 weeks left on this cycle, and was hoping to be a nice 9 or 10 percent Bodyfat by then. I just don't know whether to up calories or reduce them. Any help is greatly appreciated...sorry so long.

John

John,
There could be a million reasons why you aren't losing weight. I really can't help you with your Deca comment, because I don't know anything about steroids. I would ask someone else in the steroid discussion board about that.

Losing 3 pounds in a week is a lot. You shouldn't lose more than 1-2 pounds a week, or you might be losing muscle. But, considering it was your first week, that might be normal. What you are doing sounds correct. You are getting plenty of protein and you have cut down your carbs to a reasonable level. Although you might want to raise your carbs a little bit, and lower your protein. Just make sure your calories stay the same.

Try and do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. But, don't lift on an empty stomach. Try to lift in the afternoon after your second meal. Eat something with a 50/50 ratio between carbs and protein. Then wait an hour or so, and then go lift. Have a protein shake after you work out. You don't need a whole lot of carbs. Maybe a pure whey shake and a Gatorade. Nothing to drastic. Also, don't cut your carbs so low on your off days. Keep them up near 200. You don't want your muscle to become cannibalistic. Finally, make sure you are eating every 2 to 3 hours. This will help speed up your metabolism.

Hope this helps,
Scott

It could be water retention. If you aren't watching your sodium, because your on test, you'll retain more water than usual if your not watching your sodium level.

Just what I was thinking. Lotsa Test plus sodium=water gain, Deca plus or minus sodium=water gain. Unless you have an underwater body comp or DEXA bodyfat measurement, it may be hard to tell for sure. Cut out ALL sodium other than what occurs naturally in your unrefined carbs, veggies and lean, unadulterated protein. Drink AT LEAST a gallon of water a day, and maybe try an herbal diuretic for a few days as well. See if that makes a difference. If not, then you may have to increase your cardio (don't reduce your calories). 30 minutes is really minimal for fat loss for most people, unless you're doing it straight after a glycogen depleting weights workout.
