If your weight training and after you don't eat anything, your not providing your body the materials it needs to repair, so it will take it from either glycogen storages, fat storage, or muscle tissue. SO if you want a better recovery time and increased muscle gains its a good idea to eat after lifting. At the very least some protein, which will help prevent muscle breakdown.

In my opinion, if you dont take in some type of high protein/carb food, whether it be a shake or meal, you are basically screwing yourself, and you wasted that workout. If you dont plan on eating something afterwards, then i wouldnt even waste my time because you arent getting proper nutrients to your muscles. ALWAYS EAT AFTER! Take some BCAA's & L-Glutamine before your workout. VERY GOOD!!! ------------------

If you eat before...carbs..you body will burn carbs...can this can give you some extra energy...however if your trying to burn fat this would not benifit your cause. In that case I'd go for some black coffee to boost a workout or if you have to eat small protein meal. Peace Chuckles....lol...love the name baby

Actually, carbs are ALL you can burn during anaerobic activity (except about 10% of your energy which can be nurned from BCAA's). You can't use your body fat or dietary fat for energy to lift. So if you don't have enough glycogen in you and you don't eat carbs, your body will derive glucose from existing amino acid stores (your mucle tissue) making your workout counterproductive.

I've got a question on all this. If you eat carbs before a workout isn't that for sparing muscle and energy? But if you want to shed down some fat isn't eating carbs the wrong thing to do before running or weights? Just a little confused here...

nobu, It's the exact opposite when you sleep. Your body doesn't need the carbs to give it energy, so it will not burn your carbs. Instead it will store it as fat. You don't want to eat carbs before bed unless you are on a bulking up diet. Instead you want to eat protein. Preferably casein (milk) because it is used over a long period of time. Whey isn't a good option, because it is burned in 30 - 40 minutes. Your body will actually feed off of your muscle if you don't get some protein into you before you go to bed. riskybiz, But, when it comes to lifting, you want some carbs and some protein. Preferably a 50/50 ratio. Too many carbs and you will be sluggish. Not enough carbs and you will not have any energy. If you lift weights, and don't eat anything, your muscles will become canibalistic, and eat themselves for the energy. I have found that the best meal is a chicken breast and some brown rice about an hour or so before your workout. Hope this helps,

Two really good articles worth a read on this topic can be found at http://homepages.together.net/~twilbur/meals.htm, and one more controversial one at http://homepages.together.net/~twilbur/importnt.htm The second one reflects my experience and opinions on the importance of post-workout nutrition. I personally have found it doesn't matter what or when I eat post workout. The only thing that is important for me to grow is total calories and protein during the day. The difference meal timing, etc makes is probably close to 1-2% of performance AT THE ELITE level of athletics. For your average trainer, just make sure you eat enough (or not too much if you're dieting). I expect to get flamed for going against the grain like this, but I really think most of you obsess too much about the details and don't focus enough on the importance of JUST DOING IT.

Great articles MS. I really liked the second one. I don't believe in everything he said, but it sure make sense.

Two of my biggest meals of the day are pre and post workout(my other is breakfast). I make sure to eat a good amount of complex carbs and about 30-40 grams of protein about an hour before I work out, and a ton of simple carbs(fruit, juice, or even fat-free candy!) after my workout. Of course when cutting up I reduce my caloric intake for each of these meals, however the premise stays the same. Also, I think cardio on an empty stomach is great, but the last time I cut-up I drank one scoop of whey(very little carbs or fat) with water before my cardio, then waited an hour to eat. New research indicates that doing this may spare your muscle tissue by getting some aminos in the bloodstream. I have tried it and I dont think I lost as much mass on my last cutting cycle, the fat loss was similar as well. |
