I've been "bulking up" sort of since the beginning of the year. i started at less than 120 and now i'm up to 155 (i'm 5'5" if that makes much difference). my bodyfat has gotten a lot higher (probably around 20), though i can tell i've put on a lot of muscle too... anyhow, i'm not trying to cop out, but since i'm at college sometimes i cant just drop everything and go get something to eat, nor can i always carry food around with me. when i'm at school i'm just going to try to eat complex carbs, fibery veggie, and meat when i can, and eat a portion that looks to be around 400 cals, doing this five times a day. this sound about right? I understand that when eating clean you keep out as much sugar as possible...does that include diet sodas?

bdd, sounds like you're doing right so far, if you've put on that much. I'm also 5' 5", but only 145lbs. I want to hit 165lbs. I also find it hard to eat well while packing in the calories. Luckily, I have a desk job and I keep a blender at work. What kind of workout are you on? ------------------

i'm exactly the same way, while i'm trying to put on weight i've been eating trash mostly. My workouts have been good though, 3 days a week- legs, back/biceps, chest/triceps/shoulders. Mostly heavy stuff (for me) from 5-8 reps. no machines, all free weights. i'm taking in around 3000 - 3500 cals a day, most of it good stuff, but i occasionally dig into some dessert or peanut butter, which i'm sure doesn't help the ever growing stomach. anyone have a recommendation on calories? I went on about 2000 cals a day, with a lot coming from protein, and didn't lose anything, actually just maintained. is it not bad to go lower than that?

I'm not clear on your goals. Are you now looking to lose fat, or are you still trying to bulk? If you're trying to lose fat, the 2000 calorie minimum recommendation comes from rather large guys with higher body weights and probably lower %bf than you. A very good rule of thumb that works for almost everyone is to take EITHER your total bodyweight times 12 calories, or if your over 20%bf then multiply your LBM times 14 to get a baseline calories per day figure. For you that would work out to around 1750-1800 cals per day, maximum. Then you just adjust your cardio to get the desired rate of fatloss. If you're still trying to bulk, then what you're doing is obviously working just fine. What was your %bf before your 'bulking' began? Are you male or female? |
