When I carb up I tend to spillover a little. How many carbs should I eat when I carb up in a 24-36h period? Also what are the best carbs?

Simple carbs at the beginning and end (no fructose!!). Low-GI complex in the middle. Shorten your carb-up to 24h or less and keep dietary fat intake in check.

I carbed up on 1.5 cup of maltodextrin, 2 pints of lowfat ben&jerries fuge Brownie, 2 boxes of shreaded wheat, 4 bannas, 2 apples, a box of apple nutrigrainbars, 4 powerbars, 1/2 gallon of skim milk and one big chinese food meal and many scoops of Protien powder and some yogurt. I am going to do it different next time. Why should I cut out the fruit? I am trying to make up for the 12 days that I spend with no fruit. The reason for the nutrigrain and power bars are that I like to go out, and I cant bring cerial where ever I go. What should I do different?

One carb item that I found helpful was Jelly Beans. They are easy to carry around and have a GI rating of 80. Also, at the beginning of a carb-up, protein is not necessarily a must, so do not freak out if you are not able to have it.

Fructose (from fruit or honey) is preferentially shuttled into liver glycogen instead of muscle glycogen. Since the whole purpose of the carb-up on CKD is to fill your muscles back up ASAP (NOT your liver), fruit is not the best food. Fructose also has a low GI. A little fruit will not hurt you, but don't make it a large part of your carb load diet. Bananas are OK to eat (minimal fructose), and a couple of apples is not too bad. And like MR BMJ said, don't sweat the protein intake. |
