In the Roman Empire, Saturnalia was a religious festival celebrated in Rome and the provinces between December 17 and 24. It commemorated the reign of Saturn, god of grain and agriculture. It was the manifestation of the festivals of liberty (libertas decembris) and the Underworld. Roman slaves had a day of freedom when they became the masters and were served by their own masters who acted as slaves. Also presents were given to the needy.

The cult of Mithras came from Persia and spread during the IIIrd and IVth centuries B.C. The cult has many similarities with Christian ceremonies and rites: baptism, communion wafer, Sunday rest. On December 25, the sacrifice of a bull celebrated the Sol invictus (the invincible sun) and signalled the birth of a young sun god who sprang from a rock or a cave in the form of a newborn infant. Hmmm... sound familiar?

Dec 25 as the celebration of Jesus's birth is not a Christian thing. Jesus was probably born in the Spring.

Actually I think we have records of various Roman Census's and I dont' think they took place in winter... also shepards didn't sleep outside with their flock in December.

That's what I am saying...historians believe based on those reasons and other accounts that Jesus was born in Spring.

The Roman Empire had a tremendous effect on early Christianity that still influences the Church today.

Makes alot of sense the wise men could not have brought the son of man presents in the winter. Reason being the deserts outside of Bethlohem and sourounding this area face trechorous sand storms so bad that it is almost impossible to travel throught them at that time of year...and this my friends is true.

Nativity scenes and the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. this Christmas. This isn't for any religious reason. They simply have not been able to find three wise men and a virgin in the Nation's capitol. There was no problem however, finding enough asses to fill the stable.
