If I were you I would let them pick where I went....or I would pick to go somewhere exotic. Okinawa is really cool, anywhere overseas makes for a good time.

You'll either go to Germany, Korea or U.S.. The Marines are on the Islands.

71-L? why? That's paperwork/non-deployable. How are you even going to be able to call yourself a soldier? You're going to be working with some of the sorriest specimens to ever throw on a uniform. Most of your officers will be losers as well. I would choose where I was going. If you let the Army choose, you are probably going to Korea. 71-L's can go almost anywhere, even to bases which have few troops. Get a complete list from your recruiter of wher you can go, and then choosed what you want. I recommend Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, but it's your call.

I'd say go Air Force. Yeah, everyone says were pussies, but they sure are envious when they see how much more freedom we have.

I am a Marine, I would not chose personal period, no matter what the pay (well almost no matter) pick the infantry period. You will learn more about who you are and discipline and honor than any other job will teach you. Pick where you want to go, or you may end up in some place like Korea for 18 months. And it gets damned cold in the winter. Pick like Germany that would be cool. I spent a year on the rock, not bad but then again it was only 65 miles long and only 1 mile wide at its narrowest point. 30 days and you have seen the whole island.

Hey, I'm a Marine. I did five years as a 2512/4066 (running wire and doing computers). It's been three years since I got out and my salary is six figures. Pick a job that has some market value in the civilian world.

71L blows ass, you are everyones bitch. I doubt you will like it. I was a 95B (Military Police) I got stuck working as a 71L for a bit cuz no one else (admitted) to being able to use computers, it sucked!!!

good choice, no navy. you could go marine and get stuck on a ship only for a little while. its not too bad. not familiar with army life, seems like it would be a cross between marine and airforce as far as discipline goes. the "happy medium"? maybe. if you do go in, see the world. thats the whole point of it all. you find out alot about yourself while you are away from home. maybe the marines are different, but...since when do you actually get to choose where you go? uncle sam says jump, and you do basically. the needs of the service will dictate where you go. just a thought. ------------------

CockStrong, Being 71L is being a desk driver. I don't think you'll feel like you are in the military. BigNate, Army life varies because the jobs are so diverse. Combat soldiering and paperwork are different things.

STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T SIGN THE CONTRACT!!!!!! Look this post is going to be long, but read it, you'll be glad you did. I'm in the Army right now. It completely sucks. I know the recruiter told you that the Army is the best and blah, blah, blah. I sucks though. If you really want to join the military, then I say go Air Force or Marines. Reasons why not to join the Army: 1)The Army is loosing soldiers everyday, more than the recruiters can put in. So they are lowering the standerds. Which means you'll be working with the dumbest people, shitty leadership, and everybody is a kiss ass. Ya there are some good Seargents, but most of them suck ass. They will screw over their soldiers to look good, in a fucking heart beat. 2) You have no say so. They tell you to do push-ups and you have to. Don't get me wrong if you fuck up then alright but for a stupid reason, fuck that. They'll do that too! Like Seargent are usally in a bad mood so they take it out on the soldiers and there is nothing you can do about it!!! 3) All those be all you can be commercials are bullshit! They say you can go to college, bullshit! I've been in 2 and 1/2 years and I'm bearly taking my first college course. And yes I've been trying to take a course my whole military career. 3) All you will be is a bitch boy! You'll sign up for a certain job and could end up doing something else like LivinLarger. They show all these cool ass commercials, and I wonder why don't they show the real ARMY. Were they stick soldiers on DETAILS. They should show the soldiers sweeping, moping, picking up trash around the whole base, cutting grass, waxing the floor, moving furniture, and there are a lot of other fucking details. Ask your recruiter about Details and I guarantee he'll say it's only for people that fuck up! I guarantee it, which by the way is bullshit! I myself am a good soldier, have never gotten into any trouble, have two AAM's and an ARCOM(medals). I've been on every detail you can think of. Alot of the times you'll be doing some detail instead of your job. Imagine you get computer programmer job in the civilian world and then they tell you to go mop outside! WTF!!! 4) You won't travel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only way you'll travel is if you re-enlist, and that's if you want to and I doubt you will. You can't get any schooling like airborne, air assault, pathfinder, etc.. unless it's in your contract. The recruiter will tell you that all you have to do is put in a 4187 and they'll send you to were ever you want to go. Again BULLSHIT!!!!!!! If you want to travel join the Marines! 5) IT FUCKING SUCKS. I'M A FUCKING MAN AND THEY TREAT ME LIKE A CHILD! I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUT!!!!!! 6) They will lie to you like they did to me, oh and they have already started the lying. They can get you a guaranteed duty station in your contract for three years. TRUST ME!!! See what I mean! JOIN THE MARINES OR THE AIR FORCE AND GET A JOB THAT WILL PAY GOOD MONEY WHEN YOU GET OUT. LIKE A LINGUIST, COMPUTER GUY, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL, ETC... Their are other reasons not to join, but this post is already to fucking long so e-mail me!!! Tell me what they have told you and I'll tell you what's true and what isn't. I'll seriously guide you through your enlistment if you do decide to join the Army. I just don't want to see anybody get screwed like I did!!! Hey my friend just saw your post and he also wants to give some opinions under my name so it should be the next post. ------------------

Hey Cockstrong. First let me commend you for seeking as much information as you can before you enlist. I did the same, and I'm glad I did; I talked to everyone I could, watched all the videos, and read as much as I could. The Army is like life: if it's for you, great, but if it's not, there's other avenues of approach. Myself, I went Army because I don't like the water or airplanes that much, so the Air Force and Navy weren't options, and I didn't like the fact that the Marines wouldn't let me pick my job (plus there's a lot less schools). Plus, my entire family is former Army. As for 71L, that's fine if that's what you want to do. My buddy's a 71L with 10th Group (Special Forces), and he loves it. He never has any pay problems, and never charges himself for leave. Just realize it's a lot of deskwork, and not a lot of playing Army. One thing, I definitely reccomend Airborne. It was a lot of fun, opens a lot of doors, and those wings look cool on your uniform. I myself went Airborne Ranger, a decision I've never regretted. The Army is its own subculture; there's a job for everyone. The thing is finding the job for you. I will be getting out in seven months, and probably will continue my career in the Reserves or the Guard. It's definitely been rough, but I'm glad I did it; it's definitely made me a stronger, more disciplined and focused, person. And you can't beat all that college cash. I realize this is getting too long; please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments. Hope I've been helpful.

Cockstrong, if I had to do it again, I would not have. The Army pretty much fucked up my life, you are surrounded by shit people 90% of the time. Most Army wives become whores in short order, your friends will be fucking them when you go on a deployment or to the field. I know this sound bad, sign up and see if it does not happen continuously. As for being a MP, I was in a light infanty division my first two years. I was in the field constantly, always on deployments all over the world. I almost got killed in Somalia many times over NOTHING!!!!!!! I was a grunt with a nice title, it sucked!! I spend about 5% of my military service in a police cruiser, go figure! I'm glad to have served my country however, the bullshit peacekeeping missions they are constantly sending us on wore me down pretty fucking quick! ------------------

ARMY ALL THE WAY Don't do the 71L I have a bunch of friends who does that. It depends where you go that determining if you will chill or be a bitch. Get this, a 71L won't make shit in the civilian world after getting out. Signal or Military intelligence is the way to go. I know guys who did 4 years, got a specialist and made 60k a year when got out. These guys are 22 years old making this. Go in and work on computers or something. Every job or marine, navy, army has it's pros and cons. I'm not a damn recruiter. Email me and I'll tell you how to get what you want before you sign on that line. Once you sign, it's curtains.

as a veteran, I was a 71L, it's a good job. The only problem is that you could be assigned to any type of Unit, I got fucked and was signed to a Light Infantry unit, It sucked. I changed my MOS to 93P(Aviation Operations Specialist), the smartest move I could ever make. You will go to an Aviation Unit and they hardly ever go to the field. Check out 93P... |
