Please answer this question honestly. If you were Colin Powell and over 90% of your people voted against Bush would you be a bit skeptical about working for him or would you just completely sell out?

This is among the most ignorant questions I have ever seen here. Congratulations. How does it feel to have finally left your cave after what was obviously a long hibernation? Perhaps Powell feels that if he refers to blacks as "his people", it will only further divide them from the remainder of the population. By supporting Bush, he may enable wider black support for Bush, which in turn will strengthen Bush's presidency, and result also in gains for all blacks. Interestingly, Bush will field among the most diverse cabinets EVER, with Powell and Condoleeza Rice (funny name, smart woman) in front line positions. Why then did blacks vote against Bush overwhlemingly? Because Gore and other Democratic leaders (yes, including Bill Clinton) went to black rallies and suggested Bush's position favoring a "strict interpretation of the Constitution" meant reverting to the days when blacks couldn't vote or stood for 3/5 of a person in the census. Bush has a monumental task ahead of him as far as closing the divide, and the Democrats made it thus.

I hope Powell takes the Secretary of State Job. Given that Bush was elected under the Tecumse curse and Dick Chaney has a bum ticker Powell could end up President by default within two years or so! I was in a chat thing the other day and someone brought up the Tecumse curse, only Regan has survived it. I remember even my father once mentioning it something like two months before Hinkly's attempt on Regan. Freaked me out at the time because I had never heard of it.

Wodin, I believe (although I could be wrong) that after the President and VP, the next in line for succession to the Presidency is the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The VP is head of the Senate, and the speaker is head of the house, so I think he would be third.

I believe that is correct, VP, Speaker of the House, then Secretary of State. The nice thing about Colin Powell is that hemay be black, but he is an example to all that race, color, religion doesn't reallly matter. It is who you are and how you strive toward your goal. If race, color or religion mattered, he would not have become a General or even an officer. So this should be a lesson to all the Jesse Jacksons and others who blame their lack of success on race and the white man. It is their own laziness and ineptitude that prevents them from succeeding.

Good post chesty!! I just finished commenting on George's post about "filling the black mod void" about how incredibly stupid programs like Affirmative Action, etc., are, because it's basically saying they can't succeed without a hand-out!! If you ever get a chance to read Powell's biography, DON'T PASS IT UP! You will have glimpse into the life of one of the most interesting, successful, and respected Americans!! ------------------

I was a poly sci major in college. Matt you're a smart cookie and yes, he would be third in line behind the speaker of the house.

Ript, Thanks. Badkins - his biography is excellent, however, another worthwhile read would be COL David Hackworth's "Hazardous Duty" where he edvotes about 10 pages to Powell. Hackworth is America's most decorated combat veteran (going to A&M I get the feeling you may have heard of him) and says some interesting things about Powell, some very good and some worthwhile criticisms. He will be an excellent secretary of state.
