Well Sailor_Girl...I have 3 words for you...TTTTTEEEEEXXXXXAAAAASSSSS AAAAA&&&&&MMMMM UUUUUNNNNNIIIIIVVVVVEEEEERRRRRSSSSSIIIIITTTTTYYYYY!!!!! If you want, e-mail me, and I'll give you ANY info you want, the Corps of Cadets at A&M has produced more ranking officers in the United States Armed Forces than any other place (other than a MILITARY INSTITUTE)...A certain man named Patton once said "Give me a group of West Point grads, and I'll win a battle. Give me a group of Texas A&M Aggies, and I'll win the WAR!" NO bullsh*t, the t-shirt's are all over campus. I was a born Longhorn like JohnnyO, 'til the first half of my junior year of high school when I visited both campuses...A&M is the on of the top 10 friendliest colleges in America, College Station is great, 'cause it's small (not like drive-by-it small), but has everything you need (mall, tons of eateries, etc.). Seriously, drop me a line ASAP!! ------------------

I'm telling you, you don't need to worry about "knowing anyone!" Like I said, walking around campues, you feel like everyone knows everyone anyway...Texas A&M not only has MORE traditions than any other place on earth, WE ACTUALLY PRACTICE THEM!! Silver Taps--The first Tuesday of every month, thousands of Aggies gather and pay their respects to any currently enrolled student that has died in the past month. It is one of, if not the most, breath-taking experiences I've ever had, no bullsh*t! Just knowing that all those Aggies gather for someone they didn't even know, symbolizes the "Aggie-family!" Muster--On April 21st, Aggies all over the world come together to pay their respecs to ANY AGGIE that has died in the past year...it is said that if there is an Aggie within 100 miles of you, you should get together, and remember your times at A&M. The 12th Man--No TRUE AGGIE would ever sit down at a football game, which symbolizes what E. Gill did in the early '30s-'40s, coming from the stands to stand on the sideline! These are just from the top of my head, the list is ENDLESS!!!!! ------------------

dread_lady, I'm confused..."Don't go to school in TEXAS 'cause YOU can't register for the classes you want to..." Not to be rude, but WTF?? I agree, registering is a bitch, but life's a bitch...if you plan ahead, talk to advisors, and follow the rules, you shouldn't have any problem getting the desired classes! I DO AGREE that "knowing someone" shouldn't be a primary reason to attend a school, I had several friends transfer after "following" someone to a school... Sailor_Girl, I'd be willing to give you a tour of College Station if you ever come down for a visit...check out my webpage, there are pictures of my girlfriend and I in our "football game" attire! ------------------

Cost of living is pretty cheap in College Station SG...I live by myself in a condo by the mall, paid about $30,000 for it, payments are about $300/month...it's all lifestyle as far as expenses other than tuition, and that just takes getting used to. Yes, I am biased, but love my school, and honestly believe it to be one of the best in the nation! And yes, the first TUESDAY OF EVERY SINGLE MONTH we have Silver Taps! When you're at A&M, you're part of a family, not just a school! ------------------

Elite Bodybuilder Posts: 1260 |
I honestly think that is has WAY MORE to do with class than gender in the Corps! When you're a freshman, you get ALL THE SH*T!! And each year, it dwindles, 'til you're a SENIOR, whoopin' your ass off, and running things, giving the new freshman the same hell that you got! There will always be assholes who think women don't belong, just like there'll be stupid ass redneck racists, but it's the women (and any oppressed group) that overcome that adversity that should be admired more than anyone! I'm off to bed, if you want, I can try to get in touch with some Corps guys and girls that I know and see if I can get you in touch with them... I'm off to bed, so this is my last post for tonight, talk to you soon! Can't wait to hear from ya'! ------------------

I can only discuss the ones I have any personal experience with: University of Missouri - really pretty areas of the country. Beautiful falls and springs. The guys have it good in that town. I went there in the early 80's (I am old - 39) but the town has not changed that much. Columbia College is an all girls school. Plus there are tons of chicks on the University of Missouri campus. And then there is Columbia College. So there are plenty of college chicks all around. being a girl I am not sure what you would think of that but I miss it. Some really fine curriculums there. The journalism department is one of the best in the world - some really famous journalists graduated from there (from Walter Cronkite to many others). Good med school, great engineering dept, etc. Small town feel (about 75,000 people including students) but pretty sophisticated and educated. It has LOTS of hospitals - it has the highest MD to population ratio in the world, followed in second place by Rochester MN (where the original Mayo clinic is). Very safe very clean, fairly liberal for a midwest town. Arizona - GREAT winters. Girls wear mini skirts year around (I am not sure how much that means to you, but it means alot to me). The town has some high crime pockets, and lots of smog. But the girls wear mini skirts year around.

University Of Arkanasas... I dont think that we have a ROTC, but its still a fun school.

I will issue a running challenge to anyone here that suggests they have experienced more schools than I have. FSU, LSU, George Washington, Auburn, Texas, Texas A&M, UMass, U of RI, U of GA, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Babson College, Alfred U., U of NH, Wheaton College, Princeton, New England College, State U of NY (almost all), Penn State, Fairfield University, NYU, Dayton, Xavier, Duquesne, Syracuse...and surely I am forgetting some but it is late now. Sailor - you want Navy ROTC, so thisis what it comes down to: 1. Do you have the scholarship for Navy ROTC yet? If no, when will you know? 2. Can you get into a top notch school, such as Ivy Leagues or Stanford type? if yes, go there. 3. If the answer to #2 is no, then it doesn't matter one bit where you go for academic reasons. Second tier, third tier, it's all the same if not elite. 3b. You might as well choose some place you wil have fun at. From my list, FSU is big fun, and LSU is right up there. Auburn is surprisingly nice also, for being in Alabama. Forget the New england area. Fuck the cold. I would also say that GA Tech deserves mention - excellent school right in Atlanta. Not sure if any of these have ROTC?! But I would wait and see what Bush does for the military before I signed a contract.

Matt, why did you go to all these schools? And if you don't mind me asking, what is your IQ? If you have ever had it tested.
Moderator Posts: 2131 |
Green, When I went to prep school in New Hampshire, I visited a lot of the New England schools - someone often had an older brother or a friend who went there. Some of the southern ones were while I was in the Army - many of the guys I served with went to school down south and it was not uncommon for us to go back and visit. I am from NY and I know many people who went to state schools and I often visited. Anything not encapulated by those categories...I played basketball in college and for our away games, we often stayed overnight somehwere - if it was the night after the game, we partied. So I've been to a few places. College is fun - but not the singular domain of good times. In fact I believe it is one of the greatest frauds being perpetrated on Americans today - up to $30K a year for 7 months (two semesters) and at the undergrad level, it is often academically all the same. I have had my IQ tested many times by various tests. I don't want to get into posting results...I already have a (somewhat deserved maybe) reputation for arrogance on this board. Early in my life I was on the path to becoming one of those "12 year old college kids" but then my parents had an epiphany. If you want to talk about intelligence testing or IQs (or the fraud known as college) drop me an email. [This message has been edited by MattTheSkywalker (edited December 15, 2000).]

$10000 isn't that much...I was gonna go to Boston University and that was $32000..talk about EXPENSIVE! I also went to a private university for the first year and a half of my college career and spent $14000/yr to commute...do yourself a favor and stay away from the Northeast unless you have ALOT of cash to spend on college. ------------------

Ok I'm going to clarify myself for Badkins (and SG too I guess). There are far too many people crowded into the major public colleges in Texas (i.e. Univ of Tx in austin, A&M, Texas Tech, etc) This is due to a recent ruling that any graduating high school senior that is within the top 10% of his/her class is *AUTOMATICALLY* accepted whether the college has room or not! They are obligated by law. This is how I got in Univ. of Texas. Now, what's the other problem with this? Well, just because you are accepted doesnt mean you can get in the specific college you want OR that you can even take what classes you want. I just wanted to get in the school of business. However, I was only accepted as an "Undeclared Major" in LIBERAL ARTS. Once again, another problem with this is that I CAN'T TAKE ANY BUSINESS CLASSES that relate to my would-be major without being in the college of Business. Umm therefore a dilemma. I will not be accepted in the college of business next fall (they only admit in Fall, not spring) because there simply is no room. Having said that, I am looking to go to college out of state. My main choices are Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh or the Univ of Chicago. Seriously, just do some research on colleges before you choose or even apply to it (you'll be out $50 I guess). http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/corank.htm there u go... thats the exact link to the 2000 college rankings. Worship this page, use it well. It's your friend. Good luck SG, I need it myself. ZFor those who are content with where you are, that's great. I mean that... But just be realistic about it/ ------------------

Sweetie think of it like this, you will have this degree from this school for the rest of your life. You should go to the most reputable, prestigious university you can get into. You don't want people snickering or asking "where's that" for the next several decades. Also, depending on what you plan to major in, not every Naval ROTC program might be able to accomodate you. I just had a student who wanted to major in photojournalism & go via the ROTC & the only program in the state for that was Florida State as I recall. Look into your major field & make sure the school(s) you are interested in offer(s) that program. Also, I don't mean to piss on your parade, but its increasingly difficult to get into alot of the big, "flagship" campuses. For example, only a small percentage of applicants to the U of Florida or Florida State are admitted as freshman. Take this into consideration before applying & you may wish to write a letter to the admissions offices and ask politely what the admission rate is for freshmen applicants---of course the ROTC program will have this info too. Hope this helps.

Hey Matt, I live literally across the street from Babson College, my mother used to work there and I have two friends who go there now. When were you there and what did you think? Its not much of a party school and its got a pretty awful ratio of guys to girls(like 70/30) By the way, what prep school did you go to? just curious.

First off SailorGirl, I hope you got my e-mail... Second, dread_lady, I get what you're saying, but that's the stupid-ass Texas Legislature's fault and I believe (I hope and pray) that that atrocious SOCIALIST "top 10% bullsh*t" will be stopped in the next few years, but for sure before any child of mine applies for college! I know several guys and girls who totally slacked off in high school, took the easiest level classes, and just slipped into school with their 4.0s! Then there's me and most of the people I'm friends with, who busted their asses in AP classes, acquired ample college hours (anywhere from the 15 I got to something astronomical like 30 that a friend who went to Harvard got), yet graduated in the top 11, 12, or even 20% category...so I agree that it's bullsh*t and I'm glad you clarified! I believe that all of you that have either been to A&M, or have just heard about it, know what I'm talking about!! And it you want "prestigious," look no further...I agree that back in the '50s, '60s, etc., Texas A&M had the "hick, agriculture" reputation, but now, we have top engineering, liberal arts, and any other departments you can name! AND I CHALLENGE ANYONE TO TRY TO COMPARE WITH THE CAMARADERIE THAT WE HAVE!!! ------------------

Seeing that you are from Wisconsin, you may want to get out of the north. However, I went to Marquette and loved every minute of it. Aside from all the fun, you do get a top notch education. Depending on what you plan to do for a living and what part of the country you are in, I have found that degree from Marquette carries a lot of weight. ------------------

Unless you plan to make your future and earn a living for the rest of your life based off of ROTC, Id suggest deciding what field you are interested in and going to a school that is tops in the field. If you cant get in an Ivy Leauge school, then go to a school that is recognized for a particular field. The University of Michigan Hospital is one the nations leaders in cardiac care. Kids going to U of M for medical degrees where they will specialize in cardiac care will be interning at U of M hospital (its next to the campus). This is a major foot in the door for future work in the field. Too many of us didnt base our decisions on the right things wher choosing colleges. We went where friends went, or where we knew there were a lot of this or that... you know what I mean. 10, 15, 20 years from know, will ROTC make a difference? How many of us in our 30's think back and say "Y'know, high school football doesnt mean shit in real life. I could have spent that time studying and got a scholarship or spent the time preparing for the field I work in now." It probobly wont make a difference to you, because I think this is one of those lessons we have to look back on to understand. I dont know if many people can see the wisdom of it beforehand... ------------------

Matt-Here is a line from one of my old professors. It goes well with your idea of the fraud of college. Don't get me wrong college was fun and it is a good idea to go, but you won't learn the most valuable lessons there. "Don't let academics interfere with your education."

I recommend looking at some of our nations private schools. There are many great universities on the east coast that may interest you. I recommend looking at schools like Columbia, Boston College, Tufts, Fordham, Penn. Basically these are your Ivy League and Patriot League schools. They are expensive but offer you a more extensive personal education. I'm at a state school now but I did attend Fordham University and I have to say it was one of my best experiances. My twin brother attends there now on a football scholarship and he loves it. But there are so many choices and opportunities for you out there. Take your time and consider everything that is important to you no matter how big or small. College is serious and is going to be a critical part of your life. Best of luck with your decision.

In this respect I suggest you check the BCS then ask all those aggie's what bowl are they playing in? Since Florida State is going to Miami. ------------------ |
