Are they necessary?

I can understand if you use them for squatting, deads, etc.
But WTF? All these fuckers I see wear them for benches, curls, and OH presses.

Do they help or are they some goofy fashion item?

So far, I have never used one.

Well...I don't consider my leather one a fashion statement. I wear it for squats, deadlifts and for some pressing movements such as push-presses where I have no back support.

I have 5 belts, my favorite one is the flourescent blue with the red rubies and detachable anal beads. I took my holster off though.

The only reason most people wear a belt for is to hide their gut, and by pushing it in with a belt it makes their upper body appear bigger. I've seen guys in the gym who need two guys to pull on the end of the belt strap to tighten it and the guy was only doing lat pull downs. I don't think you need a belt unless your're doing huge weights on squats. By using a belt you take your abs out of the lift.

Helms. That leverage lock belt is a must when at a meet. It saves so much work! However the pic you posted is not double stitched they will do that for an extra $15 I think, it has been over 10 years since I bought my 2.

Checkmate - yeah, I know bro. That isn't my personal belt...I have an Inzer. I just threw that up to show people what a real belt looks like. Very few people have ever seen a good lever belt. I see more nylon and velcro belts than solid leather belts both in stores and in the gym where I train.
