I hear you bro. We've got just a small place to deadlift but thats no excuse for not doing them. No one, absolutely no one does them regularly except me. A lot of guys squat but most of them don't do it regularly. I like it though, I get to use the power racks whenever I want.

i've seen guys with amazing legs that don't squat.
huge thick backs and no deadlifting.
huge chests and no bench presses.

this is bodybuilding not powerlifting.
do what works for u and shut the hell up about the rest of the people out there.

Huh - squats? I would say at least half the people at my gym don't even train legs. Everyone has some kind of excuse for not training their legs. But.....I DO SQUATS...its kind of a love/hate relationship.

Yeah I love the excuses. "I hurt my knees along time ago." lol My bro's excuse for not training legs is "I've already got strong legs." I'd say I have just as much of an excuse to not do squats. My knees crack alot and when I started squatting it was pathetic the amount of weight I used.

bwahahahahaha, sorry to flame man. but it's not your "legs cracking" fool it's your lungs. you'd pass out after hitting a good hard set of 12 reps. "smoking hasn't effected my workouts at all" bwahahahahahaa, the man won't squat!

I dust the rack off once a week for myself. People look at me like I am in a very baffled way when they see me doing them. Kind of a "what the hell is that" look. Nothing but upper body super heros in my gym.

Down the road, in a gym far away
A young man was heard to say,
"No matter what I do, my legs won't grow!"
He tried leg extensions, leg curls, leg presses too.
Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do!
From the corner of the gym where the big guys train,
Through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain,
Where the big iron rides high, and threatens lives,
Where the noise is made by big fourty-fives,
A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees,
A very big man with legs like trees,
Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack,
Chalked his hands and monstrous back,
Said, "Boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten!
Trouble with you is you aint been SQUATTIN'!"

There is a differnce between not working your legs and nto squatting.

I have seen some great physiques in my gym who do not squat.

Lisa: Squats are stressful (that is why they are effective) to the whole body, and back, knee, etc. problem can be murder when squatting.

I have been lifting for 25 years, I have competed 5 times, and I have the best body of any 40-year-old I know. I also have spondolysthesis (one disk in my back literally slips back and forth 25 percent) and chondromalatia (knee thaing that is not TOO serious). Anyway, I am thankful to be able to work out fully after all the wear and tear of the years and with my back condition (I have said NO to surgery for the time being). so I AM NOT MAKING "EXCUSES"!!!! My spine is literally out of alignment and feels like my spinal chord is going to rip out of my skin when i squat. IS THAT ENOUGH OF AN EXCUSE for you?? I have accomplished a lot and am proud of it and all i hear is i MUST squat or i am not a real bodybuilder. 99.99% of people with my condidtion would be afraid to work out. The ONLY exercises I CANNOT do are deadlifts and squats, and there are lots of other people in my boat.

PS to my rant:

It is much more difficult for tall guys to squat. I am not good enough at pysics to figure it all out, but long legs = incredible strain due to the leverage needed.

Everyone at my gym looks like lawn darts, no legs at all. Squats are tough, thats why people don't do 'em.

Thaibox:
If your back felt like mine did when you squatted, you wouldn't!
My goal is to work out as many years as I can. If I squat through excrutiating pain (not normal working-out kind of pain), how much longer will I work out? Especially if I mess it up further? No thanks, I will take *slightly* less leg development (which is debatable) from leg press and hack squat and continue bodybuilding for many years to come. A back operation is not part of my current bodybuilding plans.

There ARE some people who have deformities or conditions where they cannot squat...that is my point and one that most people here fail to grasp. What is someone has a *reallY deformed spine, but comes into the gym and does what they can? You would admire that person. Well, take that back a few levels to someone who is 95% ok, but has a bad back, but can still do ANY other exercise, and they are somehow making excuses?

I once heard of a guy here in San Diego that competes in Powerlifting...he squats big, and for some reason has no kneecaps...but hey, if you can't squat, you can't squat. That's a bit different than not doing them for some other lame reason, like "because the weight feels like it's going to crush me..", or "they're too hard..."

I do them in three week incraments with realy light wight then I have to take three weeks to a month off or I'll be in bed and train at all. So all you saying suck up the pain and its an excuse --PISS OFF. Their are a few of us just glad to be walking.Much less able to train.

I GIVE UP. THIS IS WHY I SOMETIMES DO NOT LIKE THIS BOARD. I THINK I HAVE A LOT TO OFFER HERE, AND I AM A BETTER BODYBUILDER THAN 95% OF YOU, BUT I AM GETTING INSULTED BECAUSE I HAVE A PERMANENT, SERIOUS, INJURY AND CANNOT DO *ONE* CERTAIN EXERCISE. OF COURSE I WANT MY LEGS TO GROW, AND I DO LEG PRESS, HACK SQUAT, ETC.

Most of you tough guys complaining about people not doing squats, using a belt, etc....let's see your pictures, tough guys! Legs or not, whatever. With maybe ONE or two exceptions, every picture I've seen here looks like some bloated kid and to use the term "bodybuilder" would be a stretch.

I'M OUT OF HERE FOR GOOD.

Helmsman: I did not see your picture until today. YOu are one of the few who DOES look like a bodybuilder! And re: what you said to Volf: Exactly ... unfortunately there is pressure to just suck it in and work through the pain no matter what because you're not hardcore unless you do squats...which is why this thread bugged me.

Why are you guys always preaching for people to squat and deadlift?? Frankly, its getting annoying. You guys are like "if you don't squat and deadlift your a pussy", "people who don't squat and dealift are dumbasses. I mean look at the pros do they sqaut???? I have the 96,97, 98 road to the olympia tapes and none of them sqaut or deadlift. Only Ronnie sqauts but even he did not work his squat that hard. Dorian is considered pretty hardcore and yet he does not sqaut or deadlift (he does stiff leg)either in his video. I've seen alot of huge guys in my gym that never sq or dl. These guys are 5"10 250+ not ripped but not that fat either. I know three guys about this size that dont sq and dl but they are still way bigger than most (I said most not all) of you on this chat board that squat and dl. This is bodybuilding people not powerlifing. If a person can look better than the next guy without sq and dl he's still the better bodybuilder right. And besides it sounds alot of you guys are trying to be the next Coan or Karwoski and most of you dont even compete in pl.

Currently I'm 5'8" at 245, 14%BF. My first and only PL meet to date had a total of 1585. S-600, DL-575, BP-410....I train to be strong and look good. My primary sport is yacht racing, where strength, skill, fitness, and solid bodyweight all play important roles. What would be the point of looking like you can squat 500+ if you can even do 225 for reps more than 6 reps?

Don't think for a minute that Dorian has never squatted...or Coleman, or Nasser...

Jay2...sorry to hear about your condition. The fact that you still work out is testament to your dedication.

I am an old fasioned lifter. Everybody is different. I love the basic exercises and I love the big 3. I'm not going to flame anybody if they don't (I don't have enough time on this board anyway).

I figure if I am going to look strong, than I should be strong. Look at a picture of John Grimek. There was a man who was as strong as he looked and was also an Olympic lifter. That's the way I strive to be too. I just love to train and I do what I love.

this is actually a good post on squats. back problems can be overcame. remember how bruce lee got his back broken. he made a good recovery. honestly I do feel sorry for j2 but with surgery and rehabilitation your squatting problem can be worked on. But at your age squatting is excusable by me.

I still have a lot of years ahead and I will continue to squat and dead as long as my body will let me. I hope one day to hit an 800+ squat. I also plan to compete in pl in 2001 but there are no meets until jan and it is a good 2 hr drive away.

I squat low ass to heel low. I alternate back squats with front and at first I used to throw up and I over came it and then my knees started hurting I just bettered my routine to warm up and started using wraps and overcame the knee deal.

dorian yates did squat but he did say that he did not like it because it made his butt and hips to big. and ronnie started out as a power lifter. basically the list goes on and although some never used deads the great pros of today built their massive legs off of squats. and gear.
