well that is a lie. I have yet to figure out why but every year at this time i get very depressed. I don't even want to crawl out of bed in the morning to come to work right now.
My hair is a mess along with the way I have been dressing for work, sweats, Thank God my boss is laidback.
I really hate the fact that my freaking birthday has to be 2 days before Christmas. Everyone always forgets about me, and I end up alone that day every year since I was 17.

No matter what I try to do right now to cheer up nothing is working for me, what can I do to be happy this Holiday? And do any of you get this way?

I get this way too. I am this way right now, but, for different reasons.
I try to stay positive and always keep in mind that there are good days ahead.
Knowing that I'm turning 21 in Jan. though depresses me....I am getting old...
Or was that 17?

D -

Holidays are a notorious time for depression.

You mentioned your "being alone" as a part of your depression. Perhaps your desire to not be alone is forcing you to get into relationships where you need not be, and the cycle feeds itself.

Human behavior is known to feed on itself.

For you to break the cycle, you need to re-evaluate your perspective of where you are, relative to where you want to be, relationship-wise, financially, appearance, etc.

If you can, take the week between Christmas and New Year's and get away from your day to day. Be alone and don't be bothered.

Ask yourself where you are, and what you want. Figure out what it will take to get there, and then how to do it.

It sounds easy on a page like this. It isn't. But I've been really depressed also, then I did exactly what i am advising you to do, and changed everything.

Get over it! You are always an emotional wreck. Birthdays are for children. Who cares after age 21? X-mas is a good time of year, you get to buy presents and eat good food, and get off work.

Oh Dlady...I know having birthdays in December suck...and the closer to Xmas, the worse. Me, my brother and my mom are all December babies...its awful. I'm always so stressed out this time of year.

I'm sure your boyfriend won't forget you...you keep saying what a great guy he is..he wont forget.
I've been left by myself on lotsa birthdays..it sucks I know. Ther worst part is, eventually you will stop caring about them, and thats the worst.

I feel for ya sista.

DLady
I'm not a mental health professional, but it sounds like Wodin is right - you may have SAD, or "Seasonal Affective Disorder"...an ex of mine had it, and used to treat it with light therapy, eg - colored lights, tanning bed, etc.
Hope this helps

We all have down times in our lives. Take an inventory. Make a list of positive things you have in your life, positive people, goals accomplished, things you are grateful for ..everything you can think of. Try to add one more thing to this list everyday. Lots of don't realize the good in our life until we take a hard look at them. Do something nice for someone. Drop of some food, a toy, warm clothes at a homeless shelter, find a women's shelter, make a donation for a child for Christmas..the list goes on. Things like these can make you feel good about yourself..Even seen the movie Pay it Forward??

listen to 'Here Comes the Sun', by the beatles, a great, uplifting song..."it's been a long and lonely winter...the smiles are returning to the faces...i feel the ice slowly melting...." great song, maybe a tad childish to listen to songs to uplift ya, but ey, it works for me!

good point madbomber, X-mas is the time of year where deaths are the most painful, horrible tragedies happen every day. You should be thankful for what you have and feel for the families who have lost children and other loved ones.

My sister has the same birthday, and gets shortchanged on gifts also. She's a wildwoman.

Maybe you could try light (different color artificial light or the sun) therapy of some sort. I see your in a snowy area.
Short session tanning bed?

I just told my husband today that my weirdness is kicking in. It is a sunlight thing as well as just being drained from the year. I used to take wellbutrin for it but I think as I get older I just know what it is and deal with it. I do produce my best writing this time of year. Email me if ya want!

If you didn't get all the things you wanted, you can still be grateful for all the things you didn't want that you didn't get. Do something fun, do something exciting like bungee jumping scare it right out of you.. smile you will be ok everyone gets depressed but it is how you deal with it and be smart about it.. Do something nice for someone you dont know.....

HeyMB, I took your advice and Here is what I did... I have a bunch of toys that I bought for the ex's son, well he said that he didnt want his son to have anything from me. (do not ask about that topic.)
So instead of taking them back to the store to get the $$. I decided I would donate them all to one of the families that my church sponsers. It has warmed me inside a bit to know I will be making some child's Christmas now. Thanks!
