So they only thing stopng you from being a child molester in Indiana is the backward, rural tradition of the state.

Not too far in our distant past, girls were married by the time they were 14. They were having children often at ages less than that. In addition, many of the men that these "children" were marrying were often two to three times their ages. My grandmother, who was born in 1897, was married at the age of 13 and produced her first child at age 14. My grandfather was a little over twice her age. If you were to speak with people that are lucky enough to still be alive from the very late 1800's to early 1900's, then you would understand that this was normal less than 125 years ago. In fact, it was almost abnormal not to be married after your teenage years.

So, what has changed? Have people changed? Are people now physiologically different than they were 100 years ago? Or, has society changed? Why was this okay just a few decades ago, and now, it is somehow a horrible crime to even think about it? In many societies around the world, there is nothing wrong with what Puc is doing. So, is our society correct in assuming that this is wrong? What makes what we believe an absolute truth?

I'm not aruging the legality of this. It is obviously illegal. But your posts regarding this subject seem to indicate you think that Puc is some sort of horrible criminal because he is dating a 16 year old girl. So, if Puc lived in another society where this was okay, then would he be such a bad guy in your opinion? What if he lived a couple of decades ago and did this? Would he be such a monster then? I doubt it. You are making judgements based on the laws. The law says Puc shouldn't do this, so you don't like it.

Well Matt, the law says the we can't use steriods either. Does that make AS users criminals? Yes it does. Does it make them horrible people? Are AS users bad guys? Certainly not.

Puc is doing what Puc wants to do. Who are we to step in and judge whether or not his girl is ready for a man older than her. Do we look at her age and automatically assume that she isn't mentally capable of handling a guy 24 years old? You can't possible make that type of a judgement based solely on her age.

Honestly, what gave you the idea that I have trouble getting dates with girls closer to my age? This is far from the truth.

Also, what gives you the right to judge when you have little knowledge of the situation?

Fact is, Matt, we do have a great deal in common. There is MORE to this relationship than sex. But, I will not justify it to you, because you are far to narcissistic for that to do any good...

would it change your mind if you knew the older guy and considered him a GOOD influence on your daughter.

Keep in mind I work for her parents, they adore me and realize I have a bright future and am very dedicated to my goals. This, I think, aided the situation greatly.

puc, I don't think your dating a 16 year old is wrong. I dated girls younger, also. we won't go into details. I was just giving you a parents(mine) perspective. If all parties are okay with it go for it, it could be great.

I understand your contention. However it is also true that 125 years ago, women couldn't even vote. 175 years ago, blacks were 3/5 of a white person for census purposes.

Certainly no physiological changes gave taken place since that time. But societies make social progress, and this is expressed in their laws. It seems silly that women would not go to the polls in today's day and age, but our society has recognized that women should be afforded that right.

The role of women in our country has changed considerably in other ways. 125 years ago women often married young because their role in society was wife and baby maker/child raiser.

Women didn't have the educational options they do today, (56% of undergrads are women in 2000) and it was virtually unheard of women having professional careers. Simply put, women have more choices than they do today. How much education, after all, does it take to physiologically bear a child?
None - or the human race would have never gotten this far.

Society's role for women has changed. Voting, education, careers - it's all available. As such, it is no longer commonplace for women to marry at 14 or whenever.

The idea of the age of consent was created to frame this new role of women. This law was not declared by executive order...it was crafted to suit the society of today, not the one of 125 years ago.

I don't see the existence of an age of consent as an absolute truth. However, what is near absolutely true is that there is an enormous maturity difference between 16 and 24, as well as educational and experience disparities.

It is difficult for me to imagine a 16 year old who can contribute very much to a relationship at age 24.

the law says ..that sexual activity is illegal for anyone under 18 ..

but a male and i say male cause thats who gets blamed for sexual activities can only be charged criminally if the age difference is 5 years or more and he is over 18

example male 17, female 12 ...is illegal

First of all, I would be lying if I told you she had the maturity of a 24 year old -- she doesn't. I, however, lack that emotional age as well -- I am very immature for my age. Us working is more a matter of "meeting in the middle" than anything else.

I find it salient that neither her friends nor mine understand UNTIL they see our relationship firsthand. Then, everything becomes clear...
