Not only can I only get dsl from one company, QWEST, they charged me a second deposit of 90 bucks on top of my 70 dollar deposit for the cable and phone service, they are charging me 100.00 to come out to the house and install the software. My house is prewired for dsl and is a new home. I detect a conspiracy. The only reasonable price is the monthly fee of 44.95 for a 1mbps line that is always on.

Uhm , there is no wiring for DSL. Every house with a Phone is wired for DSL. And the software is so easy to install. Don't get ripped off. DSL runs on your PHONE LINE. You can use your phone, and use DSL at same time. Digital Subscriber Line And the software is just a protocol, Myself RASPPP is the best. But sounds like your not to familier with computers. Even so the software is a joke to install. Don't pay to have it installed.

I have to pay for it to be installed, Qwest will not send or give it to me like Roadrunner or others. This is a new house wired for digital lines. So, there is a separate catv5 line that runs the information to the gateway box (also known as the digital cable tv box)then from there to the dsl modem and then into my ethernet card. My regular phone line will not support dsl because of the enhanced digital features to increase sound quality. Not to mention the prices offered by dsl company's that would have used the phone line, wanted 80 bucks a month plus other fees for a 1 mbps line.

yeah bro, sometimes depending on the area they will gouge you. i didnt have any software to install for my dsl modem or service. all i had to do was configure my settings and install my nic card. run the wire to the other computer and the network is up with 2 dsl lines. voila. i smell a rat. you should ask them specifically what they are gonna do. there should also be a doit yourself kit, most companies have them. ------------------

Chesty, What service are you talking about, DSL runs through Phone line, It sounds like your talking about Cable Modem I don't care how "NEW" your house is, DSL runs through Phone Line. Cable Comes in from Cable Company on Coaxial, If you have Cat5 running through house, that doesn't mean it is digital ready. Cat5 from Cable Box - Modem - NIC. Means it is CABLE INternet , Not DSL. DSL ONLY comes in from PHONE LINE.

To clarify it is vdsl not dsl. The signal comes from the gateway box where it is then plugged into the wall and then routed to the computer. The amp box in my utility room is where the phone lines and computer lines come in from the street. There are two separate sets that come into this amp box that are then hooked up to different distribution blocks. One is for the computer the other is for the phone line. That is the way the Qwest guy explained it to me. http://www.uswest.com:80/products/video-internet/choice/works.html. Here is a description of how the gateway box works. Not only is there a cable going to the gateway box it has a separate line that looks like a phone line running into it as well. Beyond this I don't know. All I know is they are the only ones providing service in this area and they have to connect the wires up at the distribution block. I get the impression that it is not cable nor dsl but something inbetween. I have had cable modem and this is definitely different.

Try Telocity.com, athough if you've already checked availability they won't be able to help. DSL at something like 712K download 256k upload for $40 month, no contract they install the line for you. Best deal I've seen yet. Good luck Chesty. Peace! ------------------ |
