Well gosh.. I'm sitting in school today, I'm supposed to be holding a one day workshop on Network Essentials and TCP/IP... and no one is here.

.. oh well.. I get paid $50 an hour anyway if I sit here and play on Elite all day. If anyone asks y'all learned something about TCP/IP.

JohnnyO,

That's funny! I'm at school right now - I'm supposed to hold a workshop for "Server In the Enterprise" and no one is here either. There's no way that happened.

So what is TCP?

TCP is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. TCP/IP is Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.

It is the most widely used protocol in networking today.

TCP itself is a protocol which operates at the Transport Layer of the OSI model (I'll get to that later if no one shows...). It is a connection oriented protocol (utilizes error checking) and has much overhead (uses resources.)

Getting your money's worth?

My "Server in the Enterprise" workshop is next saturday.. I'm going to forge a sign in sheet so they don't go off and cancel next saturdays class..

And we have a question! TCP is "transmission control protocol" It's a connection oriened layer 4 protocol that does handles sequencing, acknowledging, and flow control.

Well, here's lesson 3: the OSI model. The OSI model is a 7 layer model that was created as an attempt to standardize network communications.

You noticed JohnnyO refer to Layer 4 as teh location of TCP/IP, whereas I called it the Transport Layer. Both are correct.

The 7 layers are as follows:

1-Physical
2-Data Link
3-Network
4-Transport (home of TCP)
5-Session
6-Presentation
7-Application

More to come........
