My gym has a policy against it....but I still use it and nobody say's anything to me. If they told me I couldn't that would be my last day there. I absolutely need it when I do back and go heavy. I gave up wraps awhile ago.

They should have dirty, chalk infested, corner for the real men in every gym. With the power racks and platforms. [This message has been edited by Latimer (edited December 08, 2000).]

not at my gym, cause my gym is weak. when i was in the military, every gym had chalk so it was way nice. i became almost dependent on it. now...i have to constantly dry my hands on a towel and still it doesnt work well. ------------------

Our gym has a metal box full of chalk. There's chalk everywhere they don't care. Why would someone have a problem with chalk? Assholes!!

Cause one of the members might lose footing on their otomix shoes and tear their pink spandex. Or maybe it encourages some actually lifting and they don't want that.

In addition to no chalk my gym has a huge sign by the dumbell rack saying "ANYBODY SEEN LEAVING DUMBELLS ON THE FLOOR WILL BE ESCORTED OUT OF THE GYM. NO EXCEPTIONS." There's dumbells always laying all over the place.....

We cannot use it either. Their reasoning is that it contributes to the degredation of the equipment. As if the power racks are being used any way! LOL!

MrMuscle, How are those shoes working out anyway?

Hey Muscle, I deadlift in otomix. Balley's has a rule of no chalk or dropping weights. Well they were unable to show me anything in my contact about chalk, but the dropping weight has a clause about distruction of prop. Well the have made an agreement with me. There is a mop bucket and a deadlift platform with rubber weights now. PS the MGR is a very old powerlifter.

There is a few guys in my Bally's that use chalk... but they really don't like it when you drop the weights.

Oh hell yeah! They even provide it... some people wanted to do some box squats, so they built some boxes of varying heights for it. They brought it chains and straps for power training... the whole shot. The entire floor is that rubbery tile stuff so you dont chip the cement when you drop weights. They have an arc welder on site so they can weld the dumbells back together... they EXPECT you to drop em! I scattered one of the 130lbers the other day and they didnt even get mad!!! I was incline pressing, and the one in my left hand landed kid of at an angle and blew the weld right off the end. He brought a dolly over and loaded it on and wheeled it in the back. No bitching, no dirty looks, no complaints. Ahhh, its good to be alive... ------------------

Yeah, its a laugh to see arc flashes in the back room... like lightning striking or something! Theyve tried to call it a "Family Fitness Center", but thats a laugh. Theres mabye 4 treadmills and 2 broken stairsteppers. Almost all freeweights, mabye a couple of machines. Even the machines are hardcore, no cables, they work on chains! The pulldown machine goes to 250lbs! Dumbells up to 200lbers., and even a powerlifting area for power and olympic style lifting (y'know, with the extra padded floor.) Cool int the winter, hot in the summer... Even the bathroom is hardcore! They have 4 little home shower units crammed in the wall... I used to workout at a Powerhouse that seemed to be shifting more and more to a "fitness" clientele... TV's everywhere, no yelling, no slamming weights, people getting their kids from the day care and letting them go sit on a machine and fuck around! Im right where I need to be now, and I aint goin' nowhere!

I've got 10lbs that's more blocks of chalk than I can ever use. A gym that doesn't let you use chalk is not a gym, maybe a fitness center or a night club, but not a gym. Gloves are for whimps, chalk build calouses and you ever try deadlifting 500lbs without it. Not happening. ------------------

Monster: My gym used to be very hardcore as well. A lot of machines but a separate room devoted to free weights. It was basically a shack, or appeared to be from the outside. Concrete floors, rock music, limited cardio equipment. Now its got that limpwristed fudgepacker apeal to it. A track, more cardio, a basketball court, message room etc. Becuase of the whole yearly membership bullshit I'll probably check out this other gym downtown. Its known for being hardcore. They sell shirts that say "NO SAUNA, NO CARPET, JUST IRON". ------------------

I believe chalk is the only way to go in deads. if I ever tried using a glove I would have some bloody feet right now. I go to balleys and never heard a word about not using chalk. there are only a hand countable amount who ever use the power racks appropriatly any ways so there will be no otomix shoes getting destroyed. ------------------

Chalk?? Squating is weird at my gym. People would look at me and think "What the hell is he doing? Putting that on his balls or something?" |
