1. If I have an electron with energy of 1ev, and it is in a potential well of 10ev, what is the probability of the electron to tunnel through the potential barrier.

2. What does the black body radiation curve look like and what equations were combined to create it?

#2
Is this what you are looking for?

"From detailed studies of the precise form of the black-body curve, a very simple connection between the wavelength at which most radiation is emitted and the absolute temperature (that is, temperature measured in kelvins) of the emitting object"

The equation would be something like-

Am I close? I don't have time for #1 right now..

Your pretty close, I hope I still have my book at the house for it. I should.

Chesty, where do you come up with these questions? I enjoy them even though I either don't know or remember the answers. For #1, I think you use the Shrodinger Equation in some way--I don't remember the differential equation. For #2: I just recall that the radiation is proportional to T (in Kelvin) to the fourth power, with the proportion some natural log function related to the frequency of the radiation

Elite Fitness - The Source for Your Physics Needs

Ugh, modern physics always left a bad taste in my mouth.

First, is there a width associated with this potential well? I don't know how to solve this otherwise.

For the second, I believe the curve is similiar to what HelmsmaN posted, although I think it curves a bit steeper at lower frequencies and then tapers off a bit slower past the peak.

The equation that I believe is used for model the spectrum of blackbody radiation is the one developed by Plank- a combination of the Raleigh-Jeans formula and another equation who's name I'm not sure of.

Is this for an assignment or are you just curious? If you need the answers for an assignment, let me know and I'll dig up my modern physics text.

Below is a summary of black body radiation. I don't have my quantum physics book handy so I can't say what two equations were combined, but the graph shown above in color is correct except it should shallow out at each end for each curve. (should go asymptotic to the horizontal axis) Below is the summary of the math.

For the potential well, the potential is the height of the well. If the potential is greater than the energy of the electron it cannot escape the well. Now the width of the well I believe is equal to 1/2 the wave length of the electron at the lowest energy level.

chesty, i don't have the wavelength of an ilectron in the lowest energy state handy. If you give me a number, or the velocity of an electron in its lowest energy state, i should be able to give you a probability to your first question.

Get this shit out of here. It is bringing up some very bad and painful memories of PChem.

I do not believe it has to do with the velocity, it is the strictly the energy in the first orbit for this problem. I did give you the energy of an electron above, I don't know what that orbit is if any though.

try a web search on quantum physics.
