I have'nt since highschool when the lifts were bench and clean and jerk. I am actually thinking about entering a bench or squat competition sometime in the future. My bench press is very good but I need to bring up my squat some. I only do stifflegged deadlifts anymore, but still like squatting and benching heavy. When I squat during my workout I go all the way down, I know tha tyou don't have to do that in competition. Does anyone know what the exact rules are? And have any pointers?

See if you can find an APA meet. Alot of them are just Bench/Deadlift. I'm training for one in Feb.

Thick you may want to enter a "RAW" meet where bench shirts and wraps, ect arent allowed-that is if you are used to training without them. Also find a PLifter who can coach you a bit.

I've been talking to an older fella who has pressed 520 and squatted over 600 in competition at a 260 bodyweight. I've never used a shirt or wraps before. I'm very good at pausing on the bench, I used to do that in high school. I'd have an easier goraound in the squat if I were a little shorter (I'm 6'0) and did'nt have such a large range of motion.

The top of your quads have to be parrallel to the floor, you should go just a little below parrallel so you are sure to not get a red light. Before entering a competition, get a rule book for that federation, there are certain commands and signals that you need to know.

I haven't competed but I have trained with a number of guys and found that the standards for what it "good" varies a bit from meet to meet, federation to federation.

For example, I have seen some where judges don't allow squats unless they are virtually ass to floor, etc. Also, most competitions allow some sort of bench shirt or squat suit.

Sorry bro I was out yesterday. The crease of your hip has to brake the plain of you knee. basicly just below a 90% angle at the knee. That is really why the have the two side judges, they are not really needed on the bench and dead other than to ensure you don't get screwed.

Do you have briefs and a squat single? When you wrap your knees for power go in a circle from the upper calf to just above the the knee and only make and x on the last two circles around the leg witht he x going over the knee cap.. The x is not very important, but wraping from bottom to top and not going back down is very important push more weight.

When lifting outside of the U.S. or if the judges are not american you will need to take the at least 1 in lower with the crease. I learned this in my first European meet in Madrid, Spain. The reasoning behind this I was told was because they are used to seeing the Snatch and Jerk which you are almost always Ass to the Floor.

All American Federation are the crease of the hip must brake parallel.

Thanks Check, I've worn wraps, but never tried a suit. I have'nt ever gone haeavy with a shirt on before. My usual squatting groove takes me down about 3/4, or half way between 90 and full. One of my associates has one of Ed COan's squat videos, he's going slightly below paralle with a wide ass stance. I'm gonna start incorporating some wider stance squats into my routine to get used to it. I've always just done shoulder width in the past.

Yes a wider stance with the toes pointed slightly outward will produce a shorter movement and more power. you need to start it now to get your hips steady. You will not believe the strenght increase if you have always done close stance. I do close stance on light day.+

Coan's stance is actually not near as wide as some of the Westside guys. Coan gets alot more depth than them though. It's hard to model your squat form exactly off Eddie because he has a very unique frame (crazy short legs, very long torso).
