In my short life so far, I have bought 3 dell computers and loved each one to death, good name, great quality, competitive price. Unless you want to go with a discount no name and save a couple bucks, GO WITH DELL!!! I'm on my Inspiron 5000 right now. It's great. There service is great too. I call them anytime I have a question and there really quick with answers 24/7. Well that's my .02. Email me if I can let you know anything else.

Get a Sony Viao all-in-one laptop. They kick-ass. I love mine.

I have used Dell, Compaq, Acer, Texas Instruments, and some no-name clones. Get the Dell, by far the best I have used.

how much $$$ are you looking to spend? Alot of the current laptops are coming with DVD, so think about if you want that or not. Personally I seriously doubt she will need it, if the comp does not have it then the comp is 200-300$ cheaper.

next, you have the processors--AMD, INTEL pentium I, II, III. A pentium III processor is top of the line and will be extra fast, but also extra expensive. An AMD processor is not as fast, but in my opinion its plenty fast, and ALOT cheaper.

megahertz is the word used for how fast the computer is. 4 years ago, 200 megahertz was fast, now that is VERY SLOW. Comps are updated about every 3 months if you didn't know.

Here is what I would suggest---find a comp with NO DVD {save 200-300$}, at least 400 megahertz, AMD processor-{intel is another 3-400$}. Other options vary such as screen size and battery, a NEW comp like this should run you about 14-1700$.

If your looking to spend around a grand or a little more, go for a refurbished comp, you can find a good one at compaqworks.com, I think thats the site. That is compaq's refurbishing wharehouse, those comps may have come out 6 months ago, but they are considered outdated. They have refurbished{used} comps everywhere, just do some research.

Dell comps are good, you can pick your own features, but they are expensive, probably gonna spend 2 grand. They have won awards for customer sevice.

It all depends on what you want to spend, but your going to have to spend at least 1000$ to get a quality laptop.

Totally agree with Lil juicer and JohnnyO, the sony vaio, while a little bit more pricer, is the best thing on the market!

toshibas have been good in my experience as well--> you can pick them up fairly quickly, and many come with an internal modem- this leaves extra space for other stuff.

only buy the highest spec. you can afford. realistically unless she is doing a course which requires a lot of computer processing power (i.e. computer arts etc.), all she'll be doingh is typing and wouldn't need that much speed. if she does, get her a normal pc, as they are much cheaper. don't scrape the bottom of the barrel, but a good AMD, or a high speed pentium 2 would be good. and lots of ram is useful!

I thinking of selling my laptop, if anyone is interested. Dell Pentium-II 450 Mhz. 128 MB Ram. 6 gig hard drive. Hot-swappable 24x CD-ROM and floppy drive. I'm thinking I'd sell it for around $800. Lemme know.

Thanks, for all the input I myself would lean toward Dell, but her mom points out that these things become outdated in a short period(relatively speaking),& they are not upgradeable. If true it would make sense to me to go middle ground. We,are looking to spend between $1000.00 & $1500.00, Closer to $1000.00 what do you think? As,of now she is a journalism major (sp?) with law down the road. But shes only a soph. she will probably change majors. At, any rate thanks again for the help. IRON-MOVER
