Hey, thought I would share a project with you that the SETI institute is conducting. As most of you know they have been scanning the Universe for signs of intelligent transmissions other than our own. So far very interesting results, but no E.T. Here is where you and I help, we have computers that we use at home or work. The ones at home for the most part are used to read this board or that board, surf the net and play games. When our screen savers come on the cpu continues to run, but does not do a damned thing in most cases. So, the SETI Institute thought to themselves hey, we need serious crunching power to perform the search for the very, very weak signals that we just cannot do with our computers because of the enormous amount of data. But, there are millions of pc's and mac's and other platforms around the world that could run a program in the background to perform these calculations. That would be equivalent to one huge computer with a million or more processors and virtually unlimited memory and storage. So what they have done, is written a screen saver program that does these calculations using our computer's which then send the results back and recieve a new data packet. Go to http://www.set.org then click on the seti@home link and check it out. If your computer is the one that crunches the data showing that ET exists, you get credit with the others for discovering ET. It is really cool stuff. chesty

I have heard about sharing your cpu power/time, but I have heard that annoying pop-up ads shoot at you all of the time. It has something to do with the way the cookies gets configured. Give me your .02 about this. Regardless, the E.T. stuff is interesting.

shit we need to find some intelligence on our planet! I'm really starting to wonder about the human race with morons like ell ass wipo or whatever his name is... but seriously... been part of the seti project since the beginning, such a great idea to use unused computer time to help go through all that data needing to be processed..

I've had the seti@home thing for a few months now. I've done over 700 hours on it. Never seen any pop up adds or anything.

Yeah there is DEFINITELY no pop ups with Seti@home... There might be other cpu sharing programs that do that but not Seti

Shit Chesty, I'd just be happy if I could find a PAIR of shoes, not one of every pair I own...but a matched set, right where I left them a minute and a half ago! I'm sure you feel my pain, though, 'cause you're one up on me! hahahahahahaha ------------------

Thanks Chesty, but you mistyped the address, At first i just clicked on the link you posted (www.set.org) and was more than a little confused cause that's one wierd site. Then i realized the address must be wrong. So everyone, go to www.seti.org if your interested. Its cool stuff. Again, thanks Chesty. |
