Bomber - you ever see or play in the Rucker tournament or summer league? You can still see some old school flavor there now and again. It's where Dr. J got to be a legend before he got to the pro's, where the goat did his thing, etc. I played in many tournaments and a few leagues there and it's exactly the throwback you're looking for. But as far as talent - the players of today are light years ahead of the old school guys. Many of today's guys just can't conduct themselves off court too well.

best ive played were the michigan boys... fab five and co... i pissed michael tally off on more then one occassion... i feel bad for his ass now, he sat at home watching the draft, didnt get drafted and now plays in suburbia of detroit... and gets fucked up quite often.

Michael Talley is garbage. After Nick Van Exel destroyed him in the NCAAs - he shouldn't have even bothered to turn the TV on for the draft. I played with Juwan Howard and Jalen Rose at summer camps when I was in high school. Howard was the same as now - a talented whiny bitch, and Rose pretty much destroyed everyone he played against. Rucker is different - it's not always about the superstar players - although NBAers from Wilt to Vince Carter have played there at least for one event - it's about the competition and the entertainment. The team usually include college players or guys who just finished school - and of course NY has so many guys that can flat out play and never get to anything higher than junior college......these would be "playground legends" like Lloyd Daniels or the Goat. But the teams are now sponsored by guys like Puff Daddy, DMX, - I think there is even a team underwritten by Wu-Tang, although I'm not sure. So as you can imagine it's more about the combination of the show and the skills. The guy that got me into it was a shady "store owner" in the Bronx. That pretty much means that although he operated a liquor store, other stuff was for sale.

What about Pistol Pete????? Talk about playing for the love of the game, what about Mr. Rex Chapman. I know he is not old school, but he did retire the other day. The team is still going to honor his contract and pay him for the remaining 2 years on his contract. I remember when he was doing awesome and was kicking tail everywhere, but was playing for the league minimum. That is love of the game. Did I mention that I am a UK fan? Whoops. B True

AGREE ON JALEN... ANYTIME HE REALLY WANTED TO DO SOMETHING HE DID IT, HAD A HALF ASS SMIRK SMILE LIKE "YOU AINT SHIT" AND IF YOU BY CHANCE OPENED YOUR MOUTH LOOK OUT! IVE HEARD OF THE PLAYGROUND STUFF IN NY ACTUALLY, NEVER EVEN BEEN TO NY, BUT IT WOULD BE COOL TO WATCH... ISNT THAT WHERE TRAVIS BEST MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF? BEFORE G'TECH.

your thinking of marbury, best is from springfield, MA

Travis Best is from Springfield Mass. Kenny Anderson maybe is who you are thinking of, or also Stephon Marbury. Kenny was more of the playground legend - the shit he used to do was absolutely ridiculous. remember when he scored 50 against Maryland one night and later that week dropped 47 on Bobby Hurley and Duke. (Hurley is another loser. That guy got by on his dad's high school program for so long....kind of like Chris Collins and now Mike Dunleavy - funny how it's a Duke thing.) Damn I miss playing now.

yea the rucker tournament is a legend. all kinds of talent there. one of my favorites out of there is tinsley. hes now a guard for the iowa st cyclones. he was a big part of there ncaa tournament run last year taht came up short against michigan state. that guy has skills and nba would be crazy not to draft him
Pro Bodybuilder Posts: 578 |
shawn respert was another one. ive watched this guy play many of times, and he could hit a jumper from anywhere on the court basically. everytime he shot, swoosh, no rim. then he goes to the nba and shits the bed. i felt bad about that one cause i seriously thought hed be going places.

RESPERT AND HIGGINS... BOTH BUSTS... I HAVE TO SAY THEY UPSET ME MORE THEN ANY OTHER STATE OR U-M ALUMN... MATEEN UPSETS ME TOO... I LIKED HIM AS A FAT FUCKER, AT LEAST I COULD LAUGH WHILE WATCHING HIM... BY THE WAY, MATEEN DOES NOT SHUT HIS MOUTH DURING GAMES...

my two cents. sidney moncrief, moses malone bill walton during the portland days, jamaal wilkes, george mcginnis, mo cheeks andrew toney, bird, and of course, paul mokeski. can you tell im a sixer fan??? actually the best leaper i have ever seen was joey johnson, dennis johnsons brother. he played at arizona stateearly 90's couldnt play much, but believe me, he could jump higher than carter, jordan, julius or harold miner. he had no jumper but routinely had his head over the rim for put backs and dunks. |
