Well not you particularly, but your children. Genetic diseases are very selective to race. Cystic fibrosis afflicts mainly whites, while sickle cell anaemia predominantly affects blacks. Now say if there was a way to cure those diseases in your unborn children, would you do it, even if it meant your child would no longer be your color? Scientists believe they would come out a medium brown -- but definately not white looking or black looking.

I think medium brown is what everyone is striving for. White folks like myself lay in the sun and black folk don't wanna be charcoal black so, hell yes, bring on the conversion!

I would, so I could get into a good law school with a 3.0 instead of the 3.5 a white guy needs. ------------------

I would do about anything for my children, but that is pushing it TOO far.

I think you're asking a larger question. That question is whether or not one believes in altering their children (i.e. customizing) on a genetic level... I'm not sure it's a question of abandoning race. ------------------

I can't find the article anymore.. it was on yesterday science page of www.foxnews.com.. .. seems that the genes that effect cystic fibrosis and sickle cell are linked to the genes that effect pigmentation. .. also the article mentioned that we're 99.98 percent genetically identical, with pigmantation being the most recent change.. and we all started off being medium brown. .. also pre-historic tribal migrations can be mapped to genes, for instance they found Swede's had more genes in common with people in Northern India than Finnish people.

Personally, if I knew for sure that my children were going to have a dreadful disease/defect or disfigurement, I would do anything science had to offer to make sure that child had the best possible life. (i.e. pain-free, disease free) It's still my kid no matter what color... With that said, if it was an optional procedure offered without any basis of need, I would not do it. Natymike you have a serious problems. First of all you dont know anything about affirmative action. You seem very bitter and upset. When ever there is a post about race related issues you have always have something igonorant to say. I think you should know your facts before you make serious comments. Maybe you can't or won't get into law school because you aren't qualified.

your right, I am bitter because I have been affected by AA personally, maybe this explains my attitude towards racial issues, oh well, since you know nothing about me, or Affirmative Action, I would advise you to keep your mouth shut. ------------------

here are my experiences--when I first applied to college, I mainly wanted to go to UT, I had a 3.4 GPA in HS, and a 1250 on the SAT, did I get accepted, no, I had to take a year a ACC-(Austin Community College) before I was able to transfer in. No big deal right?? well, I played baseball with two black guys who also applied to UT, their GPA's were around mine, but they both got around 1000 on the SAT, which is way below the cutoff line for UT, but wait a minute, the both got accepted and I didn't. It wasn't for baseball either, its obvious what it was for, they knew it was bullshit but they didn't like to talk about it, saying something like "well we deserve some advantages" for some reason I disagreed with that, and thats the main reason why I am so bitter about any black person being granted any benefits because of the color of his skin. Also, you might have read about he Hopwood decision, this has greatly changed the admission polocies here at UT against AA which is the best thing in the world. However, there still is other minority admission polocies which has pretty much broken my spirits in getting accepted to the law school. I'm gonna need an extremely high GPA to get in where as a black student can get in just fine with a lower one, its not as bad as years past, but it is still ridiculous. My Brother had it worse, because he applied before the hopwood decision took effect so he obvioulsly never had a chance. So maybe you are right when you say its because I'm not qualified, but If I were black, I would have a much better chance with my GPA at 3.2. And if you think I am the only one against AA on this board, you have alot to learn, feel free to do some research. ------------------

I abandoned the human race years ago. I don't see why people should feel good about destroying the environment. This is now why I am now a animal known as sasquatch, bigfoot, abdominal snowman....

I appreciate your view point and I respect your opinion on Affirmative Action. I understand why you may be discouraged by UT's admissions decision regarding your situation. Your GPA was respectable as well as your SAT. And I feel they should've accepted you. But you must realize UT was once a university that did not allow people of color into there university. Some of you may feel segragation was a long time ago. But it really wasn't. It was only 40 years ago. Most of you parents lived through the civil rights movement. Those white americans whose families lived in the south or any segragated region of our country probably benefited from segragation. I am bi-racial and I see both sides of the coin when it comes to this issue. Affirmative Action isn't perfect at all. But it is necessary until all people can be judge on a even level. Affirmative Action doesn't just benefit minorities but it also discourages discrimination of women, who benefit from it the most. My father who works for Motorola and is involved in the employment of its workers has discussed Motorola's employment policies with me. Motorola is a equal opportunity employer. But their policy only hires those who meet there requirments. Only those minorities and women who meet there standards will be accepted. My dad interviewed just as many unqualified whites as he did blacks. Once again thank you for sharing your experiance with me.
