Miami has moved ahead of Florida State in the Bowl Championship Series ratings, but like another contest in the Sunshine State, the final result is still too close to call.

Miami, second in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches' polls released Sunday, nudged ahead of Florida State, which held the No. 2 spot last week, in the latest BCS standings released Monday.

Oklahoma (8-0), a 35-31 winner at Texas A&M, remains on top of the BCS rankings, which are designed to pit the nation's top two teams in a national title game. The Sooners also are ranked first in both of the major polls.

The BCS averages the two subjective national polls into one of five components that are added to form the final value that determines the order of the rankings, in which lower scores are better. Oklahoma has a total of 2.52, while Miami has 6.34 and Florida State is close behind at 6.82.

With strength of schedule a factor in the computer rankings, it was expected that Miami (8-1) would move ahead of the Seminoles after a 35-7 win over Pittsburgh (5-4). Florida State (10-1) posted a 35-6 win over Wake Forest, which has just one win this season.

The Seminoles, however, likely have an opportunity to move back ahead of the Hurricanes if they can defeat Florida (9-1) Saturday night in Tallahassee.

"I think a win over Florida could get us back up there," Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke said.

The final BCS poll will be released Dec. 3 and the two teams will play on Jan. 3, 2001, in the Orange Bowl -- almost certainly for the national championship.

Florida, which has national title hopes of its own, is fourth in the BCS poll at 9.62.

The number of serious contenders for the national championship dropped by one Saturday when Nebraska (8-2) lost to Kansas State and fell from fourth to eighth in the BCS poll with a 17.93 rating.

Washington (9-1) moved up to fifth in the BCS poll and is followed by Virginia Tech (9-1), Oregon (9-1), Nebraska, Oregon State (9-1) and Kansas State (9-2).

Notre Dame (7-2) is 11th, followed by Mississippi State (7-2), Ohio State (8-2), Texas (8-2) and Texas A&M (7-3).

Losses and strength of schedule are among the components, along with the average of eight computer rankings. The highest of the eight computer ratings is discarded before the average is calculated. A loss results in the addition of one BCS standings point.

Strength of schedule takes into account the win-loss record of a school's opponents and the marks of the opposition's opponents at the end of the season. The opponents' record is two-thirds of the BCS mark and the opposition's opponents comprise the other third.

When the national strength of schedule placing is determined, it is divided by 25 to give the BCS point total, which favors low numbers.

All four of the individual component numbers are added together to come up with the final BCS standings number. The team with the lowest number in the BCS index is the top team.

In addition to the Orange Bowl, the other BCS games are the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Automatic bids will go to the conference winners in the Atlantic Coast, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific-10 and Southeastern.

To qualify for the BCS, other Division I-A teams must win at least nine regular-season games, not including those against I-AA schools or exempt games.

well because washington didnt beat the #1 AND #2 teams as miami did. At the same time, other factors such as margin of victory go into it, in which they have not blown out a team the entire year, many being below par teams. Plus they lost later in the year, causing them to drop in the two major polls which plays a big part, and havent beaten two huge teams after their loss like miami did. go canes.

Actually Rancid the BCS is complete bullshit even if Miami is still #2.

Miami fans, the latest BCS ranking is nothing to smile about! Miami WILL not be #2 come next weekend! Please, don't be fooled!!

See the Sagarin poll where Nebraska is #3 ans we are #4......hmmmmmmmmmmm!

Also see Billingsly & Howard Polls where we rank 5th and 4th respectfully......hmmmmmmmmm!

And finally, how is it that Miami #2 in the AP and Coaches polls and only #2 in one of the BCS polls. I am not yet disgusted as I will be if K. State or Florida doesn't win. Even then, there are no guarantees as Fla. could pass Miami with a win against FSU & the SEC championship game.

All I can say is this latest poll is intended to pacify Miami for a week and
later be used as justification for the BCS process. I can hear it now, "In week 12 Miami jumped FSU. You see, it goes back and forth over the course of the season. This system really does work."

Get ready for an at large BCS bowl bid if OU wins in the big 12 championship.

BCS is bullshit and we need a playoff system bad.

After Florida State beats Florida they will regain the #2 spot.

The problem lies within everyone's argument about who belongs where. Miami bitched because they beat FSU. Yet there was Washington sitting behind Miami. In the BCS, head to head doesn't mean as much as it should. But then again, the coaches have (or had) Washington ranked above Oregon AFTER Oregon beat them. Give me the old free-for-all system (with fewer bowls) or bring on a 24 or 32 team playoff (all 1-A conference champions [assuming the conference can maintain the attendance requirements so everyone doesn't try to jump up to the big time] and the rest of the top 25 as determined by the two polls; 11 games, no conference championship games or kickoff classics).

The BCS has worked perfectly every year so far. Why dont you guys wait to see the end result (which in the past two years has pitted #1 vs #2) before leading a mutiny-

Because in the past years the setups could be forseen. There was nothing like this year, with a zillion 8-1 teams, all having their case for that spot. The past years have had clear #1 and #2 teams.

How about the year FSU and Tennessee squared off? OSU was the best team in the nation by all accounts, they just lost at the wrong time of the year. The hit they took in the "regular" polls knocked them out of contention. I firmly believe that OSU would have taken down the Volunteers, or, if fate wasn't on their side, lost in a close one.

FIRST THE BCS... MIAMI WILL BE LEAPED BY FLORIDA OR FLORIDA STATE WITH A CONVINCING WIN...

OREGON OR OREGON STATE WILL ALSO JUMP A GOOD DEAL, NOT TOO FAR THOUGH

OHIO STATE WILL BE TERMINATED

NOW, I LIKE KEITH JACKSONS IDEA.. TAKE TOP 4 TEAMS AND HAVE THEM PLAY A SEMIFINAL GAME IE 1VS 4 AND 2 VS 3, THEN LET TEH WINNERS BATTLE... ITS THAT EASY... FACE IT, AFTER THE TOP 4 NOBODY HAS A GRIPE ABOUT BEING NUMBER ONE.

Right now we have #1 playing #2 and numbers 3 and 4 complain. If we had a final four than numbers 5 and 6 would complain-
