I'm sorry to break the news to anyone who thinks that tanning in a bed is safer than the sun. A friend of a friend died a week ago at age 20 from melanoma (skin cancer). The doctor told her it was from the tanning salon. Mind you, her skin was very fair naturally, so it provided little protection. This post isn't to scare anyone, its just to let you guys know how dangerous it really is and I know alot of us do it. I used to go once a week till I heard about this. Tan with caution. I'm sorry for your loss, but, that doesn't mean everyone who uses a tanning bed will undoubtedly develop skin cancer. I make a conscious choice in deciding to use tanning beds, just like anybody who smokes tobacco or drinks alcohol. On that note, I'm off to tan! | ||

Black, do you know how often she had been going, how long she's been tanning, and what type of beds she commonly used? I ask this because the bed I use exclusively, the "Orbit" by Dr. Mueller uses more beta rays then alpha rays, which 'should' be slightly less harmful then the normal 20 minute beds.... | ||

Lisa, Its proven that the lighter your skin is, the less resistenace you have to the sun and the more likely you are to develop melanoma. Its not me saying this, its doctors that have proven it. I wasn't saying fi u go to a tanning salon, you're getting cancer. Frackal, ------------------ | ||

Good reminder. I'm fair skinned, and can't really afford to tan right now anyhow. Hearing that gives me a good excuse to stay white. I don't think I'm going to start tanning again until I have to. thanks | ||

You said whoever goes tanning makes a concious choice to do it. I was sharing a personal experience, not saying that everyones gonna get cancer, just as a warning to people that aren't aware. Fit, ------------------ | ||

There are certain people who should not tan just as there are certain people who should not use juice. Fair skinned people should not be going into tanning beds. I am sorry for your loss, but I find the doctors conclusion a bit baffeling. The exposure you get in a tanning bed introduces far less ultraviolet radiation into the body than when outside all day. Unless she never went outside, never tanned except in a tanning bed, she could have gotten melanoma from elsewhere. She may also have just had the cancer or developed it without ever tanning. | ||

I just can't believe a Dr. would outright say the cause of her skin cancer was the "tanning salon" or whatever......there is more fsctors involved here...but, who am i to argue.....some people just seem to know it all | ||

Yeah, forget tanning, I'll just go have an apple... oh wait, pestacides! That'll give me cancer. I guess I'll go out to the club... crap, second hand smoke! That'll give me cancer. I'll just have a drink at home and watch TV... hang on, alcohol can cause liver cancer. I'll just open a 20 oz of Coca Cola... shit, the plastic of the bottle can leach into the beverage and cause cancer. Well, a CAN of diet coke will do... uhg, artificial sweetners can cause cancer. Well, I'll have a burger... but then again all that red meat can cause colon cancer. Man, FUCK IT! Im just gonna go tan... | ||

So sorry about your friend. All tanning is bad for the skin. There is no difference between beds and laying outside. If you get a tan your skin is dead that is why it turns brown and sluffs off. I am 31 and use self tanner instead. I too spent many a day laying out in wesson oil. ps. and completely off the subject check out my before and during picts on the womens page. It's under dnp continued its not the first pict you see, scroll down through some of the threads and you'll find a full bod pict. Was gonna post it over here but now my pc is acting up and it won't let me. | ||

This is why I don't use a tanning bed. I get a lot of lip from the Assholes at the gym too. They tell me I would look much better with a tan, but you know what, "They Can Kiss My Ass." The only time I tan is when I go to the beach to hang out and have a good time and even then I bring a Sunblocker Lotion. |
