I have never used them before. When I am doing deadlifts, I find that on my last two sets, I can barely finish the last reps because the bar is about to slip out of my hand. I only just recently started having this problem because I have been continually upping the weight I use and my grip strength is starting to fall behind the weight my back and hamstrings can handle. I am afraid that on next week's deadlifts after I up the weight again, my grip strength will not be able to handle it. Should I get some wrist straps?? I realize grip strength is important, but I am more concerned with being able to keep upping the weight to build my back and legs.

Check out "Versa Grips". They're only about 20 bucks and they are awesome.

Yeah bro, get them, grip strength is important but so are wraps, they help in alot of areas. My grip strength is superior but I still use wraps and I even got power hooks for certain exercises. peace

yea you should get some. I use them because I like to concentrate on the muscles I want to work and not have to worry about my grip.

Yeah, use straps --

If you're trying to work your back/legs, but are limited by your grip, why not? Get the heavier canvas straps and make sure they are long (there are some straps that are just a little too short for a good wrap in my exp)

Straps only reduce the workload by 40 percent, so it's not like you're completely taking your grip out anyway...

As an aside, do you use a semi-supinated grip when you DL?

Thank you for the advice.

Big Truck - I'm not sure what type of grip that is. When I deadlift, I alternate my grips so on one set my right hand is gripping over the bar while the left hand is gripping under the bar, if that makes sense. Then I'll switch that on the next set.
I think what also contributes to my grip problem is the fact that I do pull ups right before I do deadlifts. Pullups work my forearms over pretty well. By the time I am done with both pullups and deadlifts, my forearms are literally on fire.

Yeah, that's semi-supinated. I was going to suggest you switch to that type of grip before going to straps if you weren't already using it.

AS FOR STRAPS... DONT LET ME SEE YOU USING THEM FOR PULLDOWNS OR THAT SHIT... I SAY ALL FOR DEADLIFTS, BUT THATS IT. IF YOU NEED STRAPS FOR PULLDOWNS THEN YOU REALLY NEED HELP WITH GRIP STRENGTH.
DEADS ARE ANOTHER STORY... A LOADED BAR BEING HELD BY A FEW FINGERS... HA!!!

I would use straps too. If your worried about grip and forearm strength do some reverves curls with your palms facing away from you instead of towards you.

alrighty i ordered some of those versa grips. looking forward to trying them out next wednesday and no i will not use them for pull-ups...my grip's not THAT weak.
just curious...what weight do you crackers work out with on deadlift? i feel this is a more respectable question than "how much ya bench?"

you must be a big sumbitch IG. i've been d/ling for about as long as bill has. this is what mine looks like:

135x10
135x10
180x10
180x10
180x10

I should probably do at least one more set but for now my lower back is still getting really sore. I'm 5'10" 174lbs natural.

I use straps usually when doing deadlifts. That's about the only time I use them. I don't want to be dependent on them...

You just build yourself up to it...
and do not be afraid to do big weight.

D-lifts never get easier.. you just do more weight.

I'm at 5'10 245(currently)..so I guess I'm larger than average.

I warm up with 135x6, 225x6 and 315x6. 1st work set 365x6, 2nd 405x4, 3rd: 455x2. And then I do one or two sets of heavy singles. On my heaviest set from the floor, I've pulled 515 for a single.

When I do pin pulls (DLs in the squat rack from knee level), I've gone up to 725 for 3.

That pretty good BT, How much do you weigh?

The most I EVER pulled was 655lbs off the floor.

All my lifts are classic deadlifts off the floor (I can't do Sumo style)

Using straps, belt, wraps for any big compound movement is not advised.

All you need is chalk.

IG -- 5'11", just a little over 200 these days, usually around 207 -209. I use a narrow stance also, can't sumo for shit.

I also think that you should avoid the use of wraps completely and belts/straps only on heavy sets.
