Any ideas?

ATI's are decent. I have an ATI All in wonder in my other box and I'm happy with it.

This is from ATI's site.

The video capture performance depends on the capabilities of several components within the computer including CPU, sound card, chipset, memory and hard drive. Video capture performance results may vary from one system to another. To achieve full 30 frames/second video capture with audio, the following are typical minimum system requirements:

Capture Format Frame Size Minimum CPU
MPEG-1 352x240, I frame only Pentium 200 MMX
MPEG-1 352x240, IBP frames Pentium II-300
MPEG-2 720x480, I frame only Pentium II-450
MPEG-2 720x480, IBP frames Pentium III-700

what kind of quality are looking for?
What is your source? VHS? S-VHS? DV? BETA?
How much are looking to spend?

Second to your video capture card, the most import componet is your Hard Drives. High capacity and high speed. prefebally RAID 0 or 5
