Do employers scrutinize which school you got your degree from whether its from "BigState U." or "small college"? I would like to save money and go to a smaller college in town, but if it makes a big difference, Ill go to the Big, high ranked university and load up student loans. Whats you guys opinion? ------------------     | ||

If an engineering career is anything like a law career, going to a "name" school will pay off in the short run, ie- you will have better job offers when you graduate. However, after 2-3 years experience, where you went to school is irrelevant, and prospective employers (and your peers) only care about your level of competence. After you've passed the bar (or equivalent in the engineering field), no one really cares what the degree on the wall says. But, if you go to a name school with a rigorous curriculum, you will always have the satisfaction of knowing that you obtained a degree from one of the best. | ||

Ferrus is right. It helps you with your first job, and then after that it just matters what you can do. Actually, school is all about learning how to learn. Almost everything you learn in school is useless anyway. When you get into the real world, you figure out some amazing hard shit just because you have to! | ||

I think school has a little to do with it. I originally planned on majoring in Chem Engineering but i decided that shit wasnt for me. A friend of mine just graduated from Cleveland State U in Chem Engineering. It took him over a year and a half to find a job. His problem was that he had no expirence. Every job interview asked him if he had any expirence. He also told me that his grades didnt matter too much, considering that he graduated with a 2.7. but, he ended up finding a job in detroit, and he is making a shit load of money. The company is paying for his apartment and personal trainer. Plus hes going to make around $55000 his first year | ||

apartment and personal trainer?! Must be relocation package or something. If anyone is familiar with texas, In Austin I can go to UT or St. Edwards U. I know UT is the Big Name school but it is expensive and the biggest school in the country whereas St. Edwards Univ. is quite small and less expensive Im sure. I guess I need to look into the ranking of St. Edwards in engineering. Anyone else? Chesty? ------------------ | ||

The school matters a great deal. I am going on six years in the industry as an Aerospace Engineer and everytime I interview, the first thing they look at is the school I went to. For example, I went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ. ERAU is known in the engineering community as one of the best schoools, in fact we are consistently in the top 20, it might even be the top ten. Grades do matter as well even years after you have graduated. You want to pick the best school you can afford and then get the highest grades possible. | ||

My brother is majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Drexel. Hes doing pretty good for someone in his 3rd year. When he went to do an interview the 2 guys doing it ranked who they thought was best. My bro was #1 on each list and had nothing to do w/ the school hes going to because there were other people from the same school who were interviewed too. ------------------ | ||

Yes they will rank the best people, but I am telling you for a fact it does matter. For example, Raytheon (Beech Aircraft) Prefers to hire people from ERAU because "they know aircraft" Same for Boeing. The interview I just came off of in Phx, the first thing the guy asked me was what school did I go to? It is just like going to Harvard for business or law, you will get better paying jobs on the average from that school than say Arizona State University. | ||

I went to a Ivy league school and received a degree in Biochemistry. Now I do not even work as a biochemist. I am now a cumputer engineer, with a CCIE, MCSE+I and a whole bunch a other shit. Morale of the story is do what you want, have the desire to be the best at what you do and make alot of money Mad ------------------ | ||

Shit! I need to get into your field! You dont even have a degree in CS either, You must have certifications out the ass and such. I cant believe the damn pay! If your a Senior Engineer, you must have good experience and paid your dues I assume? ------------------ | ||

SuperDave, A CCIE certifcation is a very advanced networking certification. It is the industry standard. If you have that certification, it is not uncommon to see numbers like MadHacker's, or even more. If you want to talk about computer certifications, drop me a line. I have a few myself. MadHack, I'm testing for my CCIE soon. I have a CCNP. | ||

good luck matt. Get the hands-on. Know the basic, master the details. They through some fucked up shit at you in the lab. superdave. it is better to learn in the field than in college. Most professors are in tenure and are not up on the emerging techs. This hurts the students and does not prepare them for the real world. Mad ------------------ | ||

The Bros are right on. For your entry level Engineering job, most of the preferred employers won't bother interviewing at Joe Blow University. Those are the guys who go to work for the state, making about half what the rest of us got. haha. Get your degree at MIT, U of I, U of M, Cal Tech, etc, and you pretty much write your own ticket, anywhere. The comment about having a 2.7 GPA, no wonder it took a year and a half to get a job. I wouldn't bother interviewing anyone with a GPA below 3.0.......IMHO, GPA matters big time. End of rant. ------------------ | ||
