Hey guys I see alot of talk about cable modems and everyone is in awe of them and their speed. Well we just installed a firewall (Black Ice) and yesterday it gave me some interesting news. In 1 /2 hours on line yesterday my computer had 23 attempted breakins. SO my setting for Black Ice is on "Paranoid". Nice of the assholes at cox cable to tell us about needing a firewall and exactly how dangerous these things are! ------------------

YMKP! It could be several reasons fore the alerts beyond someone trying to hack your system. For instance if you use icq or one of the other flavors of chat this will cause firewalls to say woo hoo! ------------------

Yeah you need something when your on a shared wire like that. I used to connect to peoples 95/98 machines and upload a porn pic and set it as their wallpaper.

Don't put it on paranoid you won't be able to use your computer for icq and some other progs. You don't need a personal firewall, you prob are getting alot of things like sub seven attempt and netbus probe. It's just people scanning your network for users with trojan viruses on there computers. If you scan your files you download, and download from secur sites your changes of having your comp broken into are zero.

YMK, I think Blackice has a logging feature. It would be interesting to see where the packets are coming from. It might be that at least some of them are originating from Cox. If I remember correctly, that is a DHCP connection. I don't know how long the IP address is leased for, but when it renews, I am sure that there will be some packets coming to you from the router. Another possibility is gamers doing a port scan looking for open game ports to attach to, so they can play PC games. I am not a gamer, so I don't know much more than that about what the gamers do. Of course there is also the possibility that hackers are doing a port scan, looking for systems to attempt a breach on. If you are using Windows95/98, make sure you turn off Flie and Printer sharing. If you are using WindowsNT (server or workstation), make sure you disable ports 135 and 139, and disable IP forwarding. If I lost you with any of this tech talk, shoot me an email, and I can point you to some great resources that will give you peace-of-mind. HelmsmaN

well I'm actualy planing on connecting an old pc I have to the internet via Cable, then networking it to 2 other PC wich will be used to work from home, the old PC or "Server" will have windows NT installed along with a fire wall and maybe a proxy server program. while my personal PC will have Windows Millenium, and Norton Virus and Black ice. I'm going to set it up so that My PC can access the server but the server can't access my PC so I if anybody tries to connect to my line, all they will get is the server but will not get access to my personal shit. I'm not a big network person, My computer field is more in the line of Web/Graphic Design, but I really welcome your input, JonnyO has provided some good ideas for me But I'de like to know if you guys have anymore suggestions.

BlackICE is very sensitive to begin with. More than likely you're just getting pings and other harmless stuff from web pages, ICQ, etc... You can use ICQ with BlackICE on the paranoid setting. You have to configure your firewall to allow activity on certain ports that ICQ uses. BlackICE's web page( i think it's network associates website) has information on how to do this along with ICQ's site. BRR: Norton Anti-Virus has a feature to scan your email. If this feature is enabled hackers can gain access through your pop account ( I believe it's port 139). Your best bet is to have the email scan disabled. www.grc.com Nifty little site that will scan your pc for openings. Click on the link and then go to Shields Up. It will scan your ports and let you know if any are open. Stealth ports are desirable. Remember, no pc is safe unless it isn't connected to the internet. If someone wants in bad enought, they'll find a way to do it. If you're really paranoid you can encrypt your sensitive data. A good program that does this is PGP. They have a pretty good free version available at www.pgp.com I forgot, it only scans the commonly attacked ports. There's over 67,000 ports so just cause you passed the grc scan, it doesn't mean your box is secure. [This message has been edited by Latimer (edited October 26, 2000).]

Will Black Ice and other firewall programs allowe me to use Hushmail????? I heard some of them block the applet? is this true? is there anyway to set it so the applet can be opened without any problems??

I use the Zonealarm firewall and have no problems with hushmail. BTW does anyone know of a good anonymous proxy server program or some good sites for working proxy lists??. I have tried A4proxy and multiproxy, but all the proxys go dead real quick. [This message has been edited by jakethemus (edited October 27, 2000).]

Thanks for all the input guys. One thing is that I dont use ICQ and it seems that all the "pings" or "attacks" came when I was posting on newsgroups-in particular RAME (rec arts movies erotica)-yeah I'm a porno freak ------------------ |
