Bodybuilder faces life in prison for stalking Spielberg

A man obsessed with raping Steven Spielberg could face life imprisonment after being convicted yesterday of stalking the Oscar-winning film director. case notes
Jonathan Norman, a body-builder and would-be actor who was arrested near the film-maker's home, was expected to be sentenced at a later date. Prosecutors are pressing for a life sentence because Norman, 31, has two previous assault convictions and qualifies for California's "three strikes" law.
The jury in Santa Monica found Norman guilty after deliberating for little more than three hours. They had heard Mr Spielberg testify that he and his family still live in lingering, daily fear of Norman, who boasted to police that he wanted to rape Spielberg while the director's wife, actress Kate Capshaw, watched.
Norman was arrested in July near the Spielberg home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles carrying a list of the names of Spielberg's seven children and a "rape kit" containing a knife blade, razor blades, tape and handcuffs. In his car were two more pairs of handcuffs. Police also discovered a book with a shopping list of tools they say Norman planned to use on Spielberg, including three eye masks, three sets of handcuffs, four pairs of nipple clips and three dog collars.
The obsession continued after his arrest and in January prison guards found papers in his cell that included the names of Spielberg's family and a map of his neighbourhood marked with a heart and the initials "S S".
Spielberg and his family were in Ireland where he was filming Saving Private Ryan with Tom Hanks when Norman was arrested. "Disbelief was my immediate reaction," said Spielberg, when told about Norman's obsession. "I became completely panicked and upset and I was afraid to tell my wife. My reaction was what anybody's reaction would be. Thank God he was caught - he would have completed his mission."
Norman discovered the film-maker's address by buying a �3 tourist map of stars' homes and spent a month watching the mansion. He failed to gain admission by telling security guards at the gate he was a worker there.
