very well.. speed is very good, i didn't install hardware, but the cable company did. usually there is some latency when accessing new pages, but once they are accessed they come up pretty fast. i use a proxy server with mine, but i'm a computer nerd anyway.. what is it that you do?

I work on computers myself, I use a DSL line, but I wan't to start working from home a lot more. with a Cable Modem I'm hoping I'll be able access sites faster Upload and Download files from websites I work on, stuff like that kind of like working from home type of shit. How much did you pay for it????????

I got roadrunner service. It costs $40 a month and the speed is real fast. All you need is a NIC (ethernet card) and you're good to go. If you already have a NIC installed they'll just use yours. If you don't they'll install a 10 mbs NIC on an open ISA or PCI slot. If you have USB, you can get an external USB NIC. The installation service was $50 for me but I had my own NIC already installed. It would be $100 if you want them to install a NIC for you. I think most of them use a 3comm 10mbs NIC. The speed in my area is great but it's all relative to how many users are on your network (neighborhood). Get yourself a firewall because the security isn't that great. I actually bound my NIC to their network and had access to everyone's pc in my area. Well access to everyone who didn't password protect their pc's and had print and file sharing turned on. Overall i'm real happy with my service. They have a proxy server that the installer had my browser using but i disabled it after he left.

Just remember that if you have a network running, and you have print and file sharing turned on, make sure you password protect all the pc's on the LAN. You don't have to worry about it if you have file and print sharing off.

Another thing i forgot, you loose some privacy too. It's not a big problem but some people will use packet sniffers and they can observe all the packets sent and recieved.

For all you cable modem and DSL users, here's some useful links that will help you test your cable modem or DSL speed on the net. It also has registry tweeks that may or may not improve your modem's performance. http://showcase.netins.net/web/keithh/dsltips.htm

hushmail should be fine... however that is one of the reasons i use a proxy server / firewall with mine on a separate computer.

Cable modems are good to go.. I set-up my parents cable modem and run winproxy on a gateway PC and 4 clients so they have their own little at home LAN with internet access..kinda neat. Worth the money... only draw back is speed degredation depends on how many users are on your segment, for each user speed is cut in half..so what starts at 1mps becomes 500k...250..125...etc.. each time somebody jumps on. Still blows away modems at any rate..

Well I have CableVision at home. In my area it's a telco-return which means its only cable down stream and it uses the phone line upstream. So you might need to get another phone line if you want to recieve call while on the net.
For the past month service availiability has been excellent! Speed according to NetMon ranges from 500k-2mb per sec. Remember the place you download files from is the largest factor in the speed of your download. Nope it's an external modem : SurfBoard I pay $25 per month plus the ISP fee of $10 and the cable modem rental of $15 for a total of $50 a month plus tax. I would get DSL but the Service station is too far from my house for me to get any appreciatable speed and it's much more expensive than the cable except you can use the same phone at the same time for the DSL and talking. So you don't need to shell out more money for a new phone line. ------------------

Big Rick, My answer might mean more if you're considering Optimum b/c thats what I have.. I paid $99 for the modem itself..then you pay $29 monthly if you're already a Cablevision customer...which I am not since I have DSS, so it costs me $39 a month.. Not sure about the hardware thing... ------------------

ThaNX A lot bros. I'm very concerned with my privacy, I wouldn't wan't anybody fucking with my data, or personal shit. I plan to set up a small network in my house, me my uncle and my cousin are going to start doing freelance work here and there, so I plan to network 2 PCs and 1 "server" I'm thinking about connecting the "server" to the inter net via a cable modem and then connecting the two PCs to the "server" Would that work????? As you can see I'm not a network guy.

oh sorry.. i was hanging around the main board for a bit.. that's fine for a server, mine is 120mhz Pentium, with 128 megs of ram and a 2gig hard drive. Only thing on it is the Windows 2000 server and the proxy server software (which i will be happy to provide if you don't have it). It won't slow you down, as the the 10BaseT connection to the cable modem takes up little processing power and a 386 could handle it.

BRR, I have Optimum Online also - I live on LI just like you. As far as hardware - you have to install the network interface card (easy, even for a non computer guy) and then install the software for the modem. This is easy. it comes with a CDROM and they hold your hand all the way through. The physical conection - you plug a cable wire from the cable company into the back of the modem. You connect the modem to the network interface card. It looks like a phone jack except it's bigger. If you want to really impress the network bitches, the phone connector is called an RJ-11 connector, while the cable modem (ethernet) connector is RJ-45. BRR - it's easy. matt
