This problem was on my trig. test yesterday and I couldnt solve it to save my ass! I just want to know how its done so in the future I wont bomb stuff like this. Here it is: Two pulleys are connected by a belt: One pulleys radius is 8 centimeters, the smaller pulleys radius is 5 centimeters, the RPM of the larger pulley is 80 RPM. Find the angular velocity of both pulleys. ------------------

No problem, dude... this gives me a chance to test out my scanner... yay! See if you can follow my work:

Warik looks right, but I will do the problem tonight or tomorrow and let you know, it will give me a chance to use my scanner some more.

Damn it, I knew i had to relate the linear velocities to each other because they are the same for both pulleys, I dont hink I was taught to calculate the linear velocity then divide by the circumference of the smaler pulley, but it makes sense. Weve got so many damn formulas for this stuff but I knew it was simpler than I was making it out to be. Thanks man ------------------

Been a long time for me and physics but warik answer appears correct. You could also solve as simple ratio, 8/5=X/80 (inversely proportional) IE the ratio of radii should be inversely proportional to the angular velocities.

Ok, I was take a stab at it, but you guys answered already, besides, who cares what I think... ------------------ "Don't eat me! eat Dredd! he works out!" - From Judge Dredd.

The key is the linear (or tangential) velocities. They must be equal because of the belt velocity is assumed a constant.

Superdave what part of engineering are you majoring in? Just curious cause my brother is a mechanical engineer. They make some pretty damn good money. ------------------ |
