Curious who thinks microsoft should be broken up into smaller entities?

I personally think it would be bad for the computing industry to possibly loose main operating system with the potential to suddenly have 100's or thousands to choose from.

Similar to the phone company deregulation in the 70's. Now we got more phone company's than most of us have hair on our head and none of them are cheap!

I think that trial's a bunch of horseshit. If I was Gates i'd relocate to a new country and tell them to fuck off. Who's next Cisco? They have like 80% of the router market and I don't see them catching any flack.

True, whatever wrong doing MS did they should have been dealt with by local courts and the US gov't should not have got involved at all. But there again, you have the gov't controlling every aspect of our life. Do it the gov'ts way or get bulldozed under.

It's gonna be a sad day when they start taxing the internet.

True, no one will use it. And while it may be a rumor and hype, all rumors have a basis in truth. That being that the gov't is wanting to start charging for emails. And pretty soon I'll bet that someone try's to get the free long distance services to be no longer free with some kind of tax going to the feds.

The only reason it hasn't been taxed already is simply because it's international.

The telco's are worried big time. I don't see the free long distance services being around much longer. Wouldn't be surprise if the telcos start buying them out like they're doing with the ISP's.

The Government has a plan in action right now to assign everyone an email address. We won't see it for a few years but it's coming. They're even contimplating online voting. Now all the chinese can simply hack our voting system, instead of buying off the politicians.

World Wide Web is still the Wild Wild West at this point but it's changing everday.

The premise for the Micorsoft breakup is already obsolete. There are so many web browsers out there that a monopoly is impossible......

Windows 2000 is supposedly Microsoft's last operating sysem - they are developing a new line of products called Microsoft ".NET"
which may change the face of the company we know - and by the time the Supreme Court gets this case it will be old news.

As far as the free long distance - alot of companies other than TelCo's really like this stuff, and have an interest in seeing it prolonged. It will be interesting to see where that goes.

Matt

They are coming out with some dumb names for the OS's. Millenium and Whistler for example. I don't know if I like the idea of accessing my applications over the internet. MS is really pushing it though, so i guess that's where we're headed.

I don't think the govt can responsibly tax things on the net...unless they want to write more importation laws cause most internet servers would probably move off shores or something...If I was bill Gates I would relocate my company in Trinidad or somewhere else and tell the Govt to Back the Fuck off and get it's shit together...

I don't like the idea of accessing my apps over the internet either. I guess I just won't up grade from Windows 2000 Professional.

I like my privacy.

Free long distance should be here in about 3 years (some insider stuff here). I can't wait because that will mean I can work from HOME!!!

I kind of like accessing the applications over the net. For instance take my contact list. I can look at my contact list from my home computer, or my work computer, or my PDA, or my cell phone. Really cool. Imagine using your cell phone to print a Word document you written to a laser printer in Tawain. Are you ready?

I don't even carry my laptop anymore. All I need is an internet connection.

JohnnyO, It's cool for stuff like that. Not so cool for pirated software and the privacy freaks. It'll be interesting to see how they do it. I just hope they don't have pay-per-use licensing. They're probably gonna have yearly contracts or something.

HELL NO! Why create a series of smaller companies that will eventually dominate each market segment as opposed to the current company that exist now.

It would be like taking doctor evil and splitting him into twenty mini-mes. Bad idea! Bad! Bad!

We have enough trouble getting the two/three platforms we operate on now talking to each other. Imagine if you had about 10 platforms that each had various attributes that are somewhat outstanding in comparison and you realize for optimization purposes you need the major attributes of five of these. You are in deep conectivity, communication, doodoo!
