Hey bros. I know a lot of you have jobs in the computer field so I though you might be able to help me out. I graduated in August with a degree in Information Management Systems and a minor in Computer Science. Since then I have had a rude awakening. After going through 4 years of hell and being told that there are tons of job opportunities in my field, I can't get a job. I have went to job fairs through my school and put my resume on every job site I can find. All the companies I find want someone with experience, but how am I supposed to get experience when no one will hire me? I am starting to get discouraged. Any advice or similar experiences? Thanks.     | ||

www.computerjobs.com and www.monster.com may be a start. Don't worry about finding a "good" job with "good" pay, just worry about finding a decent job that will give you experience. If you are still living at home, you might want to try an internship in a computer job (aka work for free). You won't get paid a thing, but any form of experience is useful when looking for a job. -Warik | ||

It sucks- A lot of CO's want you to have inernship experience. The easiest way to get a job is to get the internship. You do a decent job, most likely you will be hired. However, since that is not an option for you, I agree with the other comment of getting a decent job to start with even though it doesnt involve much pay. Work up from there. Most people stick with their first job for a few months-1yr anyway. Its all for the experience. Funny thing huh- grades really dont mean shit, its the experience and or personality that counts! Where ARE you? In Atlanta, the market is so hot, people taking six month training classes have their pick of jobs when they finish. I had 0 (zero) experience as an Oracle DBA which I am doing now (and loving it) but the first company basically told me that they were looking for someone to be a Junior level Oracle and be mentored by a Senior Level DBA. The reason for this, the that both will do the same work, the difference is that they were paying me $82K to start as a junior, where as this "senior" guy ( who only had 3 years total experience ) was getting around $145K for doing the same work. You can also see if you can contract yourself independently for small projects and get some experience there. What you best in? VB? cold fusion? oracle? MsSQL? you name it, tell us where you live because some of us may have contacts there. Right now, I am working from home. My employers are located in Hong Kong. They hired me over the phone and email interview. I dial into work each morning and work for a company that I have not met one single person in. Strange but true. | ||

Atlanta is perhaps the best place in the country to be for these jobs. Austin TX and Phoenix AZ are excellent. Consider relocation. Also, remember that the first year may be tough - but the market is still growing, and after 3 years you will be a virtual guru. Matt | ||

I got lucky and landed a good IT job fresh out of school. Hang in there, you'll get yours. I get daily email tips from this guy. Go to his site, he offers lots of job hunting tips. Try "The Basics" link, and "Articles" Good luck, and be patient.  |
