When I was younger, we had this man in our scout troop who was about 50-weighed 140 and was 5'5" not one ounce of fat on him. He always knew everything about outdoor stuff. Living off the land, tracking, and finding water, etc. The guy could carve anything out of a piece of wood.

Well, it turns out he was in the service in WW2 and Korea and always voluntered for the most dangerous stuff. He would go out in advance of the other forces and gather information and such. The rumor was that he got captured a few times, but always managed to escape and took down a few soldiers each time.

Obviously, he never talked to us kids about such things and I don't know if any of the stories were true, but the guy knew his stuff and all the other adults gave him extra respect at all times.

I still think he was/is the toughest person I ever met.

My mother.

She raised me and my siblings to be generally decent, upright people (even when it was not necessarily to our benefit) despite the fact that she had to deal with REALLY SHITTY family situations on a daily basis.

She wasn't perfect and she made mistakes, but if I had to be in her shoes I don't think that I could've survived, let alone stuck it out for 30 some odd years to raise us kids the way she did. When she was younger I vaguely remember he being somewhat happy and being almost comical and carefree. But this disposition is no more than a fleeting and extremely vague memory. There are no photos of my mother smiling - I think that is sad. And in real life - she smiles even less.....THAT IS TRAGIC.

My father.... he lost his left arm in a farming accident when he was 25...He could tie a shoe, tie a tie, drive a straight shift vehicle, tie a lure or hook onto a fishing line....and everything else we all do everyday except with one arm......He hunted Deer, Quail, Dove, etc....Yes he could hold a gun with one arm and shoot accurately!!!!!!!! For those of you who hunt try that one....!!!!!! I wish I had measured his arm because it was huge, but I never did....he lived to be 88.......

Later,

My mom! She raised me and my sis as my dad died when I was young. She did a WONDERFUL job and I could NEVER ask for a better mom. to MOMS everywhere!!!

Physically-tough....that would be my hubby! He puts up w/ only so much crap (he deals w/ the public, a lot in busn.), then he doesn't put up w/ it any more. He doesn't liked to be bothered w/ "stupid" things or the "stupid" ways people act sometimes. Who does?! He puts in a hard days work and still finds time for the gym & me! (Of course, I come before the gym.)

hmmm....toughest physically a close call between my dad and my friends uncle who at one time was the last orgional member and Head honcho of Seal Team 6

toughest emotionally my Grandmother for taking care of my grandfather after his stroke, and mom for putting up with my father, my sister, and the toughest one me...

toughest to deal with my grandfather...
Worked with his hands his whole life...became the head of the Union for the tire factory he worked for...Spent over 20 years doing that, and providing for 7 kids and a housewife...Survived a stroke and became paralized on the left half of his body which forced him to retire...became a desk cop volunteering to help what he could to clean up his neighborhood and city...
For anyone who knows about the side of Tyler, Texas near John Tyler highschool you know how bad it is...His tough guy attitude is still there even threw all that...And even now he still won't take shit from no one even for a crippled....

Thor,
He fought cancer for longer than one man should.
They removed his sinuses and the pallet of the upper mouth. You could look through his mouth and she the membrane that surrounded the brain. Then he under went all the bullshit treatments, which you think are going to kill them anyway. Only to find out the cancer was in his throat not his sinuses. Then the docs radiated his thraot some much they killed his ability to swallow or talk well. They then had to give him a feed port to his stomach and he was never able to lie down again because the stomach acid would flow up and attack the membrane around the brain.
This went on for more years than I can remember. Thor was 6 foot 3 and well over two hundred pounds. When it was all over he couldn't have been much over 115.

For the longest time he asked my wife and I to get married so he could be thier. Finally we set the date only to have him die a couple weeks before.

Why was he so tuff, never once did he complain - never. He always felt that it was the path choosen for him.
"Thing don't happen to you they happen for you!" Thats what he would always say when I would get mad about whatever.

Hardests thing I ever have done was give his eulogy. When a man is loved and respected as much as he was, they had to seat people in the hallways and on the sides of the church. I have never had to speak before such a large group.

Thor believed in giving back and why he was put in my life I don't know but I am changed forever for it. Thor believed in good tools and high craftmanship and believe the best cause going today was habitat for humanity. He felt all families needed homes.

P.S. - Thor never knew his mother and grew up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. Maybe thats were he got his tuff as nails attitude.

I have know plenty of skull busters but none of them were or are near as tuff as Thor.
