amsterdam is the most incredible place on earth!! (the only thing comparable is the island of ibiza, spain). i go there every chance i get.
i'm not sure what it is, but that city has a very different energy, it really changes you.
i've travelled to other cities in holland too, but amsterdam is different. i love it so much that i have plans of moving there next year.
i met a girl this summer who told me something i think is quite true. she said that there are certain places on earth that harness a very intense energy that affects consciousness. when people go there, their awareness is heightened and they are capable of experiencing a very healing, intense bliss. on the flip side, it is also capable of causing deep depression. those places, she said, are amsterdam, ibiza, goa (in india), and bali.
sorry to ramble, but that place rocks. you're very lucky to get to go there.

I went to a Cannabis Cup there in 96 with 3 good friends from High School, we sampled over 50 strains of herb and for a week we were in a new world it seemed like, if you go, check out the DAMPRING Coffee shop, best hash cake on the face of the earth. I might add that the train to Germany was the most enjoyable ride of my life, thanks Carmen.

yes, i'm pretty sure i'm going to move there.
the language barrier is a bit scary, but i'll have to cope.

i've never read the book you're talking about. but i don't want to stop doing drugs!!

i think you'll understand what i'm talking about when you get there.

the place is beautiful, the drugs are the best and are legal, the coolest fucking music, gorgeous women, awesome design, and the friendliest and most open minded people you will ever meet.

scott825 - i don't know how hard it is to be a citizen, but i think it would be relatively easy for me to get a work visa since my company has an office there. "Dutch" (from this board) also told me it is pretty easy to go there if you are a professional.

king - don't expect the place to be very tranquil!! the place is high-energy and the dutch party like their lives depend on it!!
what do you like to do? what kind of music do you listen to? i might be able to recommend some places to go.

Amsterdam Rocks.
I lived a few hours from it for 9 years so I was there at least once a month or so.I never had a language problem though,it seemed most everyone spoke english.
Amsterdam runs the full spectrum man,you can go to a fantastic art museum and go around the corner and there's hookers in the windows.
They are very liberal but I doubt you could obtain citizenship easily as there are so many political refugees from other countries all over Europe now.Your best shot is a visa that you can extend every 3 months for a while til you figure something out.

king..

i really hope you like psychedelic electronica because if you do, you will really get the flavor of amsterdam. the dutch LOVE trance music, especially hard-ass, distorted, 144bpm, dark, psychedelic goa trance. it is the only place in the world where i have heard goa trace played at a club (you can actually hear trance music being played at restaurants and department stores!).
if you can, go to the "trance buddha", it is in the red light district. the upstairs dancefloor is reserved for hard, wicked, goa and downstairs is more of a chillout area with couches and floor mats and they are playing ambient music. don't expect to pick up any women there (although i did a couple of times) it's not a meat market, it's more of ceremony of intense psychedelic partying. definitely candyflip if you can, with mushrooms and ecstacy, you will truly enjoy it, i promise you!!
the mazzo is fun too and so is escape amsterdam (especially chemistry night).
as far as coffeshops go, havoc is right, the dampring is awesome, so is the greenhouse namaste, baba, and if you want to kick back in a really psychedelic environment while listening to ambient, go to the global chillage.
anyway, write to me if i can help you with anything.
good luck.
