Im not talking to the moon mind you, im talking between galaxies. Hell, between soral systems for god's sake. Given the Unimaginable distances that seperate levels in our galaxies, i dont see a way, at least not in the near future. 100,000,000 light years across our galaxy. And thats at light speed! Can we make something move faster than light? Bend space? Use gravitational force from the weak interacting magnetic particles(wimps, still unknown, beleived to be the "dark matter")? Harness the power of Z particles? Fuckin A! ITS GETTIN OUT OF HAND!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Have you seen "Event Horizon". Good movie in space travel. ![]() ![]() ![]()

You are traveling through space right now on the outer spiral of the Milky Way, over a million miles a day! ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It is actually 300,000,000 ly's across our galaxy. We would need some form of "warp" drive and to make it meaningful, we have to consider there would be limits on that as well. Star Trek introduced this concept, where it would take 300 years to travel to the Adromeda galaxy and then in TNG they got flung around by Q and at one point were in another galaxy that would take them sever hundred years to return from. Oh yean, the reason you need Warp drive or something similar is to prevent that nasty side effect of speed called time dilation. If we just traveled as fast as possible, there would not be to many people left for us to talk to because of this. It is a cumulative effect that can't be reversed. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I think it's possible, but not in our lifetime. The United States' and foreign space programs just don't seem to have this in their "to-do" list as they should. They are more concerned with screwing around with Mars and searching for any previously existing life blah blah blah. I read somewhere that they were planning a manned mission to mars in the next few years. In regards to Star Trek, chesty, sadly I missed most of TNG series, but I think Q just tossed them into the Delta Quadrant (where the crew of that God awful boring show Voyager is now) and introduced them to the Borg. It's true though about the insane time it would take for such travel. Keep in mind, the nearest other star system (Alpha Centauri) is roughly 4.6 light years from Earth. At speed of light travel, that would take four and a half years (but a) objects with mass cannot travel at the speed of light, and b) if we were to travel near the speed of light, after 4.6 years everything will have changed due to time dilation). Now, if we were to travel to Alpha Centauri with current technology, we a) wouldn't even have enough fuel to make it, and b) we would take probably 1,000 years to get there. I don't think even the ship would survive. Between galaxies? Andromeda is 2 million light years away... even with speed-of-light travel, that is definately out of the question. In the Star Trek series, humanity finally got off its ass and started being productive sometime in the 23rd or 24th century. Looks like we've got a few years to go. =( -Warik ![]() ![]() ![]()

Indepth analysis of Mars isnt a bad idea. That planet, with a few tweaks, could be colonized. I still thing that travel to other SOLAR SYSTEMS is important. Red giant phase of our sun=our asses. I know that we are moving in space on the arms of the galaxy, im takling about us leaving the planet and going somewhere else, for whoever made that comment. Chesty, where would one begin to look to reveal warp capabilities? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Kind of on but kind of off topic. How do you guys feel about genetic engineering to enhance the human race? I'm saying, since this is probably more plausible in the near future than a warp drive, we could speed evolution up in the following way: Each generation of genetically engineered super-humans would improve their offspring, each better, smarter, more capable then the last. I don't think this would actually work and I'm not even sure if it makes any sense but I'm bored and figured I'd throw it out here anyway. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

i'll tell you what fractal - if they ever call for volunteers for genetic manipulations to increase muscle mass - i'm there!! ![]() ![]() ![]()

hey frac: I think we should only use genetics to cure hereditary diseases and other diseases. Also for creating personalized organs for transplants if need be. Making people smarter, faster, stronger is moraly wrong. There are things we shouldnt manipulate to that extent, and thats nature. We arnt god, so do play him. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The trip to alpha centauri at conventional speeds say 25,000 would take approximately 123,393.46 years. But you are right on the futility of it at this point. Mars yeah that is cool, but let's get off our collective asses and develop a real space ship, one that can do everything we need. We are capable of it, so let's stop dicking around and do it. chesty ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

FUCK YEAH CHESTY!!! I love astronomy and cosmology classes and the vast universe is somthing that really intrigues me. I would love to explore it. The only reason i dont study those as majors os because studying the universe while stuck on earth would suck. I would want to be out there seeing it for myself. I bont believe in studying something that cant be interacted with(not much at least). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Frackal: Start your own thread. Have any of you ever read much of the theory of relativity? According to Einstein (and I'll take him at his word) time slows down relative to an object as it approaches the speed of light. At the speed of light, time would stop - relative to that object. Thus if it were possible to travel through space at that speed, the only problem would be that the time on earth would move at the same speed, and none of the mission's planners would be around when the spacecraft returned. The astronauts would have not aged. Einstein's theory of relativity claims that faster than light rtavel is impossible. However, there is some contradictory evidence, which claims that if it is possible to move faster than the speed of light, then time will move backward. There is some corroboration to this. A recent experiment moved some sub-atomic particles through a specially prepared tube, at a speed greater than light. The particles were observed to leave the tube before they entered. (Yeah it sounds really weird to me too.) If this is experiment were a train leaving Philadelphia for NY it would have arrived 300 hours before it departed. yes, it's possible. No, it won't happen soon. Mat [This message has been edited by MattTheSkywalker (edited September 29, 2000).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
