I am curious to read peoples opinions on 2001:A Space Odyssey. The first time I saw it I was about 13, I was lost all the way. But for some reason liked it. When I saw it again, I then was able to understand the link between us and evolution and so forth. (as the movie/book wanted us to understand) I was still lost with the ending and the stars and such, until I read about it and now I understand what the Monolith is and is not. I will not say what the Monolith is until there are some responses. Remember your grade depends on it. chesty

I'm still trying to figure out Planet of the Ape's! Was that really the statue of Liberty? I though the ape's were from another planet? ------------------

As I understood it, the monolith was a representation of an Alien force which was watching humanity from its cradle, and finally, at the end, it decided that we were advanced enough to sustain ourselves without its help. As for the stars, I think what that meant was that the monolith was some sort of creator, and the stars were all the different civilizations the being had been a part of creating. That's what I got from the movie, I don't know... ------------------ "Don't eat me! eat Dredd! he works out!" - From Judge Dredd.

2001 was a cool movie. I saw it in it's entirety a long time ago. I recently watched the first half again. The apes were funny as hell. I may rent it again soon.

Yes, the monolith was a representation of an Alien force. The one in space around Jupitor was a gateway to the homeworld of the Aliens. It was in essence a stable worm hole of sorts. We can gather that it is quite massive as in dense, during the second episode, 2010, because of there appearence on the planet Jupitor. What was happening was that they (the aliens) were adding mass to Jupitor to bring over the limit necessary to start and sustain nuclear fussion. See when Dave passed into the gateway he was transported at incredible velocity to their home world. Side note who knows how HAL got his name?

mightydog: All Star Wars movies were badass, except for the new one, too much attempt to draw in the kidies. Chesty: I have no solid ideas on what it represented. Ill have to think about it awhile. Ill get back at it.

fuck yeah, chesty. 2001 is the best fucking movie ever made!! it is a true masterpiece. i think that the fact that the meaning of it is not spoon-fed to us and is up to a bit of individual interpretation makes it a more powerful work of art. i always saw the monolith purely as a symbol. to me it represented great leaps in human consciousness. joseph campbell wrote that it represented the human feeling of awe. based on his notes, it is possible that the original story actually meant for it to represent alien intervention. i didn't get aliens from it at all, i felt it dealt with a more advanced human consciousness, especially the ending since it is an exact paralell of mind travel (as is jodie foster's trip in "contact").

Jodi Foster's travel was not in her mind it was a real event. She and her spacecraft entered an artificial worm hole and were transported to the planet and back. That is why there is 2 hours of static on her recording even though everyone else that the trip took a microsecond. Yes, they were an advanced race, the description of the monolith comes from the book. Why would we travel back in time and interefere with our own existence? In this case causing our existence to happen. That is a paradox of sorts, the future creating the past. chesty |
