Seriously don't sweat it - I've got more friggin initials after my last name than there are in my last name! Why, because I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up, still don't know for sure... I let you know in about ten years or so if I make a decision. So far I got a Thre MA's, one MIS, and at last count 5 undergrads. Enjoy the ride guy...

Well as someone that is a Ex CJ major I know now that I would not want to be a cop unless society was in Dire need...If the Gangbangers overan the cities and all else failed....Oh who the hell am I kidding, we'd have martial law and then we'd all be screwed then....

My decision to stop studying CJ was based purely on my own mind not wanting to have such broad power to affect in a legal sense a persons life...I used to see alot of crap on TV about bad cops arresting innocent people or cops who were breaking the law and framing people...

I thought about and decided that the only way I wanted to affect someones life in that sense of negativity, is unless they are trying to break into my home or hurt me which they would have to meet a few little friends of mine.

NOW I'm on to the Bigger power...Financial GAINS...I'm still throwing my major around a little bit. Right now I'm a CIS major, but I'm probably going to go back to Marketing, cause I know one way or another I want to go into sales....And this field offers pretty high rewards to those that excel.

I don't know of many types of jobs were you can recieve a salary and commision...Thats one thing I've learned in College, Greed Can take you pretty far if you put it to good use the right way.

Uhh... if you want to be a cop, why are you bothering with college? My friend's dad is a cop, and I have more of an education than he does. Last time I checked, the pay wasn't that great either...

Then again, if you're going to college, why do you want to be a cop?

The fact that you're going to college is a great opportunity for you. Don't waste it. Use your degree to put you in a field that makes good money and won't have your wife bitching at you when you get home cause you didn't call and she thought you got shot or something...

Don't flame me folks... just my opinion. =)

Benny,

I think you been listening to too many of those NYPD ads on the Radio.

Trust me you don't wanna be NYC cop not in this day and age. Don't get me wrong being a cop is a good rewardings job (try for NY state police) or be a cop in Jersey.. just not NYPD.

Also you aren't gonna be a Long Island or Staten Island your first 10 years is gonna be in Housing or if your lucky Transit.

Trust me on this Benny, one of my friends did this the last time the NYPD went on a hiring binge and the last 5 years he's been working the various housing projects north of 125th. AND HATES EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Plus your friends making 70-85K have probably been in awhile or are have NYPD ALUMNI.

Try 35k to 45k including mandatory overtime.

IG

King B aka Romeo, stay in college, graduate, then make your choice, if you want to be a cop at that time then do it.

Benny, in regards to those cops who are making 85k-90k per year...

1) How long have they been cops?
2) What are their ranks?
3) What kind of work do they do? I doubt they drive around looking for people parked next to hydrants.
4) How long do they work?

85k-90k per year is alright money... depending on how long it took to get such a salary and how long one must work to earn that. My friend got his second computer programming job and he's making roughly 50k a year. My other friend is also a first year programmer (with no college by the way) and he's projected to rake in about 161k this year (yes, that's one hundred and sixty one).

Stick to college man... it's boring and it's a waste of time, but it'll get you the six digits if you pick the right major.

I have been a cop for ten years. I can tell you it is a tuff as hell job. You have to find the right wife, most cop marriages end in divorce. You won't have any friends that aren't cops. You will go to your friends funerls (4 and counting).

You will see death, you will deliver the bad news and hear the screams of mothers for the rest of your life. You will be hit on, spit on and shit on by the public.

You won't make the same amount of money as your peers. I am at the top law enforcement agency in the state of Florida, have a masters degree and still will not break 50 this year.

But!!! I love my job. It is an adventure every day. I have saved two lives in my ten years. I have put down many criminals, you name it I have had the pleasure of putting their ass in jail.

I have also helped countless numbers of people out of all manner of problems.

My advise to you is, if your doing it because you think its something you might like to do, don't waste your time. Stay in school, you need the degree if you ever want to move into administration. Do some ride alongs with different agency's. If you like that maybe get involved as a volunter at an agency.

If you have direct questions e-mail me and I'll answer them.

hey iron god..i know that the nypd pay is only 35-45..but as you move up in rank ...your pay rises with you ..nypd is so huge that the possibility for progression tom higher ranks is good ..as long as your good..and you know people ..if i do try to become an nypd officer ..im only doing it as a means to an end ....because i want to end up working in nassau county or even suffolk...they are the ones making upwards of 85-90k...

warik they start out at around 45-55k per year ..and they hit top pay 1fter i believe 5 years ....in nassau or sufflok they are regular beat cops ...driving around just doing there thing ..detective will obviously be making more money ..but ..hey ..to have the adventure ..everyday at work,....i think that ..the police force would be good for me ..because i have the type of personality where i get bored with what i do easily ..so i think it would keep my mind occupied ...

like i said it is only an idea that i am kicking around .

i appreciate .the resposes

and ic ..i will do just that if i have any questions ..thaNKS BRO

City just approved a general raise for the cops in Dallas. starting cop makes $32,000 I believe is what the said to work nights in south dallas in the projects with the crack freaks. That is not enough for me to get shot at.

The highest paid cops in the Nation are on Long Island. In both Suffolk and Nassau counties, the average cop's pay after 7 years is $105,000 per year, with no overtime.

In fact, Nassau county is in such fiscal dire starits that there is no overtime permitted.

That number is not a typo. I live here and read about it in the paper every day so don't ask me "are you sure?".

We also have outrageous property taxes. I'm talking like some of us pay $40,000 a year.

Suffolk county cops START at $51,000. After 5 years they average $73,500. And it's up and over $100,000 by year 8.

KB you already know this. That was for the other bros.

As for NYPD, it's high-risk, low pay, and there's always a minority group ready to yell brutality, over bullshit. The job is hard enough without that.

Reconsider.

Matt

The thing you have to consider is:

1. Do you want to do something with your life that will make a difference and go home every day being proud(also probably broke, but hey isn't it all about inner pride and selfless service)

or

2. Show me the money!!!!

There is nothing wrong with either choice. YOU just have to decide which is more important to you.

Ben,
Look towards the cops in Suffolk. They are in fact the highest paid officers in the country. And for whoever asked you why you're in school right now, its b/c here you need at the bare minimum, a 2 year associates degree to even be considered. I looked into this a while ago b/c I was gonna take the police test this past June, just so I could have my options open. I changed my mind...I like fashion better...
Oh and if you have any questions, lemme know, b/c you know I have 2 good friends who are Suffolk cops...later...
