Beside this...what are some of the other ways to decrease soreness and increase recovery time? Lots of protein, water, heat any other suggestions?

Stretching helps. The heat from the whirlpool causes increased blood flow which flushes toxins from your muscles so they can be destroyed by the liver.

I'm w/ C.Oak on this one, too. Nothing does the trick for me like a hot bath. Oh, also, light a few candles & turn the lights down. Turn on some soft music. This just makes you more relaxed, too. Does wonders for relaxing the mind as well!

Oh, I forgot....there's some stuff called "Biofreeze" that I think you can only get by prescription. (A friend got a bottle for me.) You rub it on like a cream, although mine is in a bottle like lotion w/ a pump. It has a really strong odor & when you rub it into the sore part of your body, it gets a "tingling" sensation to that part. It's like a sportscream type-thing.

so what about the conroversey surrounding heat and muscle "injuries" (i say injuries cause weight training causes microscopic tears in the fascia, the body overcompensates in the repair, and viola, hypertrophy)...im not sure how the increased blood flow from heat application is bad, but why do major league pitchers always ice down after a game?...

I've read that even though it FEELS better to take a hot bath, that it's actually better to take a cold one due to the fact that it reduces the swelling and speeds recovery.

That sounds excruciating, a cold bath after a hard workout. My body aches thinking about it.

You have to be very careful with a cold shower right after workout, it could cause you to go into heatstroke, because you have told your body that it doesn't need to sweat anymore and when you stop sweating before releasing all of the heat your internal temp goes up quick.

The reason for icing is to reduce swelling, healing cannot take place while there is swelling. Heat is good before starting an exercise and alternating heat and ice in 10-20 minute intervals is good too.
