Cisco is a fairly hard certification to get for a beginner... I would do the MCSE first and then try for a Cisco. In the order I recieved them I have CNA, A+, CNE, MCSE+I, CCNA, CCNP (the older one). I also teach this stuff in the evening.

40K on just an A+ would prove tough, more like 28K to 32K range. A+ is just general computing with no networking involved. I teach at the Computer Learning Centers. Perhaps I will change as they seem to have legal problems all the time... though not from MY teaching! One of my former students got hired on today at BP for 60K.. it is SO nice to help people.

Kaiser, Try this http://www.trainingcamp.net I know alot of people say Boot Camps are bullshit but if you're just looking for the quick (NOT EASY) certification, than this is the way to go. This by no means can take the place of practical work experience, but will give a general grasp of what is what. And you get certified also.

Cool thread. I am currently working as a PC Tech. making 30k+ with no certs. I am currently studying to take A+ then will probably go to the networking test and try to move up to Networking Engineer. If you wanna talk about the A+ cert. feel free to email me at big_pimp_c@hushmail. Peace, C.

The CCNA seems pretty easy to pass. I'm in the Networking Academy right now and it's boring the shit out of me. I only took it cause I didn't have to pay and it's supposed to provide some good hands on experience. I could easily just go by Todd Lammle's study guide and pass the test but I don't want to just be a paper cert. I think the CCNP level really seperates the men from the boys. Don't let people fool you when they say the CCNA is difficult. Maybe for someone with zero computer knowledge, but if you are familiar with networking and basic hardware and troubleshooting, then you won't have any problems. Lots of reading but that's about it.

unix is always a good way to go. i learned it on my own in college and then got a tech support job starting basically where you were and in about 4 years i have tripled my salary. unix is not as complicated as everyone makes it out to be. bottom line is, pick something you enjoy and just learn and hop around from job to job and gather experience. you're not going to make big money right away, you need to build that experience up.

I'd get an MCSE to along with a CCNA or at least an MCP if CCNA is the farthest you plan to go with Cisco. Not to say that a CCNA can't make decent money but an MCSE with Cisco experience will increase your salary nicely. |
