Ok, so there I am driving on over to the new car dealer to get my free tank of gas as promised in the purchase of my recent new car. I arrive, and the salesperson hops in my car and we head to the gas station. There I am standing outside the car when I suddenly realize that she's pumping my baby full of Regular. (I drive a 222-hp 2000 Maxima GLE which recommends premium grade gas.)

Me: "Uhhh, you're filling it up with regular?"

Her: "Yea... it doesn't make a difference. The higher grade of gas is just the gas station trying to make more money off of you."

So, for any of your bros (or ladies) who know lots about cars (or just lots about gasoline), who is right? Is the salesperson right for telling me that regular is the same as premium, or is Nissan right by saying "this monster needs premium, regular sucks!"

The money is irrelevant to me... a full tank of premium is roughly $30 and a full tank of regular is about $27. $3 is chump change. Just want my car to be happy.... =)

Honey, you are right totally because most sports cars and such are better off using the higher grade gasoline, it performs better in your engine.
I have only a ford ranger and if I use anything other than preimium gas my truck will make funny noises. Plus it is alot better when you are on the highway alot of the time! So I suggest you at least use the Plus gas if anything else.

high grade gas burns hotter, over time(long time) it would be harder in you motor, but a very long time(15-20) years. I use both in my autos. I will go to E>T auto and get some hot gas 107octane and mix it with 50-50 with prem at the pump about once a year to clean my injects out. may it sounds like the engine is going to come apart on this stuff it adds so much power. Just my opinion though. I never have clogged injects though, t

my car definatley runs different on lower grade gas...87 octane will not push my baby to maximum potential...i will only use 93 octane premium gas............I drive a 98 Cobra and that baby needs the juice it eats it like crazy so my gas bill is crazy especially when i am paying 1.68 a gallon..

Sounds like the car dealer was just trying to save a few bucks... bastards. I guess in about two weeks when I fill up again (the fuel economy on this thing is superb), I'll pump it full of premium.

No wonder it was running better the first time I filled it up. It's first tank of gas came from the dealer... must have used regular then too.

Warick , I too have a 00 Maxima se. I used reg for 2 mos until I read the Book. ?
ever since I have been using plus. gas miliage etc was the same as the prem gas.
Here in MI they just finished doing a number of stories about prem gas.
Conclusion-- you dont need it!!
Ford says they only produce 2 cars that need prem.
They also went on to say that the station makes an extra 6-7 cents a gallon on prem.
ps; That car does get awesome gas miliage!!

I am not a car authority, but when I bought my new ride I did a little research. Automakers design their cars to do just fine with 87, since that is what most people buy.

I practice what I preach - I have put 85,000 miles on my 1999 (not a typo) - and every single one of them with 87 octane.
