My fellow posters, what have you done to your cars to improve performance? I'm currently driving a Pontiac Grand Am GT with a measly 2.4 liter DOHC 4 cylinder, but I will get performance. I refuse to entertain the idea that I can't make this puppy run with at least a 3.4 liter V6.

Man, I have never posted here before. Strange place!! My little 240SX also has a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder and rear wheel drive with a 5 speed tranny. So far the only thing I've done is a new intake (homemade with a K&N). But the future holds BIG PLANS for this little rice burner!. Future mods include rebuilding the motor with lower compression pistons and stronger rods, metal head gasket, ARP head studs, cams from Jim Wolf Technologies, Full turbo kit running sonewhere in the neighborhood of 16 psi, JWT ECU upgrade, Jacobs ignition, Apex N1 exhaust, Limited slip differential, short shifter, 17" wheels and with Nitto 555 tires, Straight pipe in place of cat. converter, and probably a 6 point roll cage so I won't kill myself. This would give me 350+ horsepower in a car that weighs less than 2600 lbs. No flashy body mods or big spoilers. I want to keep this one as much of a sleeper as possible. The only indications that this car is out of the ordinary will be the wheels and exhaust. That is, until I hit the gas and you hear that turbo spooling up like a jet engine!! My car has the twin cam motor and is a coupe so it weighs less than the hatchbacks. Goal is to run in the mid 12's or faster in the quarter mile on street tires. Will it happen? I sure hope so!!

yeah, i got the twincam too. I don't have a whole lot to spend, but thats probably because I don't have a job, been meaning to get one. But I'm in college so I have to make sure the studies are goin good and can't let anything sidetrack me from my schooling if i want that Skyline someday. Actually I can't decide, Skyline or Supra, I suppose I'd better test drive 'em both before I decide.

I can tell you two different things that you might or might not already know. One is that the Skyline is not normally available in the U.S. It is, however, being imprted by one company and brought up to U.S. emissions standards that will probably hurt power output. Also, since it is a Japan only car, it is right hand drive, meaning you would have to shift with your left hand. And lastly, they are selling for anywhere from $45,000 for a base model, all the way up to $90,000 for the fastest version, the GTR. So you would probably be better off getting the Supra because you could find a used one for around $20,000 and do some work to it and have a very fast car.

Supra is pretty much your only option if you want a truly fast import... I would say second would be a 240 with the SR20DET conversion. I'm sorry to all the import lovers but FWD drag race cars are pretty useless... What the honda's are doing in the quarter mile in 1700lb stripped race cars with slick and wheelie bars a domestic can do on DOT's and full interior with the same amount of money + have license plates on it

I am a Stang man myself, but my boy has a Rx-7 Turbo II and on drag radial it rips off 10.90!!! Check it out!! He races in every Import day at E-Town. It's white and I can attest that he drives it daily!!! Sometimes over a 100 miles daily!!! It is lowered and handles excellent. This is an excellent example of a daily driver. My Mustang ran 10.20 on rawdog, But wasn't very streetable!!

My last Stang made MM&FF. The article was in B&W though!!! Sucks! It was a 408 cleveland headed Windsor. Street Compression 10.7 to 1.
It had NO trans brake and it ran 10.20 at 132 all motor. Raw dog!!! Never got to use the Pro Shot Fogger. I sold it to my partner.

Hey jdahmer, how much horsepower would you estimate that the Turbo II has? Just curious because a 10 second quarter mile for a daily driven RX7 is damn impressive. I would really like to see that car. How much boost is he running??

Allright!! Finally a post for the motorheads on this board. I got a 92 stang gt convertible that I just got done building. I put an Incon twin turbo kit on it. I love it! Im only running 8lbs of boost on a stock bottom end. I went to the track last wednesday nite and ran 12.73 @110.2. On a set of general xp-2000 hard as a rock street tires. My 60ft time sucked it was 2.11. Im expecting 11's with slicks. The boost is your friend....Turn it up!

To answer a few question, My friend's car competes in every import contest in Jersey!!! The car is ACTUALLY the original HKS white TurboII. My friend said it was a dud when he bought it!! He made alot of changes along these years. It has a huge single turbo. And the top mounted intercooler is gone. It is in the nose now. I can swear he drives it daily!! He gave me a ride in that killer through the pothole filled streets of Newark!!! He still uses a stock tranny but, a nasty race clutch. He is a true die hard. He busted a half shaft at the track and swapped it out between rounds. He raced Peter Farrell last race. He had the the hole shot, but Peter looked like he shot some nitro at the end. I am not sure about HP but give him a call. He owns Car Trix in Newark. His name is John. There is no better feeling then letting a 12 sec stang get out half track and seeing the green on the Protree. Then coming around that guy before the end!!!(final round at Mustang Showdown at Atco,99) 132 feels wretched!!!

Man. I would love to have a ten second daily driver. That would be very nice to say the least, although I would worry about reliabilty problems with such high horsepower.

Anyone else got any fast cars? Other than a Mustang. No offense guys, I like Mustangs but is it just me or does everyone seem to have one. They are good cars no doubt but I prefer something a little different. Anyone else??

I actually made mine slower. 6" lift, 35" Swampers, brush guard, winch, skid plate, and rear axle truss. 0-60 in about 20 seconds, but I love coming up behind little cars at night and blinding them with my lights.

Yeah but every body already knows a Cobra (great car BTW) is fast so it is a little harder to get in a race. I prefer to have a sleeper and catch poeple by surprise. I agree about all those Hondas. Seems like everyone and their grandma has a Honda with some rims, A big 'ole exhaust tip and a big super spoiler. I f*ckin hate seing those cars anymore. To each his own but I would rather keep my sh*t on the downlow. Plus I pay less for insurance if my car is not known for being fast.

And I hate to tell you but not everyone can afford a "real" car like a Cobra. Some of us have to make the best with what they can afford. If money were not an issue, I assure you I would have a better car. BTW, who were you referring to with that "buy a real car" statement?

And not to beat this topic to death but I happen to enjoy taking a car with alot of potential and turning it into a real screamer. To me that is all part of the fun. Sure, I could just go out and by a Mustang, but then again so could everyone else and then I wouldn't be any different from any of them (common scenario). I like smaller cars and I like fixing them up. I have owned a little CRX and I have also owned an integra GSR. I have also owned a '66 Impala with a 283 and a powerglide 2 speed tranny (the one used in alot of drag cars) that was in immaculate condition. But it was too big of a car for me (4000+ pounds). and the Hondas were fun little cars but not enough power for me. Plus you are very limited to how fast you can go with front wheel drive. That's what I like about my car now. It is lightweight, it's got a great suspension, it's rear wheel drive and it has got a lot of potential (although some aren't insightful enough to pick up on that). Anyone can buy a fast car but it takes alot of hard work and alot of knowledge to build a fast car.

Well, I must say this is an interesting topic.

I drive a 1995 Kenny Brown Cobra.

Every mod you could think AND still breathing without induction.

Honestly, I am partial to the car, but it is truly an ass kicker.

Check it out at www.kennybrown.com

Cars. They are fast or they are not or they are somewhere in between. Weightlifters are strong or they are not or they are somewhere in between.

Point being-I am more impressed by a 300 lb guy benching 450 lbs then a 150 lb guy benching 350.

When I use to work on cars. Me and my boy built a 95 Cobra up. We yanked the 4.6 4cammer and sent it to B&B. They went through the engine replced valvetrain, put lower compression piston, billet rod, polished and knifeedged the crank, ported and flowed the heads. We dropped it in with some long tubes(a fuckin nightmare) and a Vortech!! That bitch ran pretty good. B&B said that combo should easily make in excess of 450HP. We also put 4.30 gears in the back, but the we would be out of engine before full boost. We should have went with 3.73 or 4.10. But that's what the dude wanted. I have anew Maxima Se and laugh when these gus pull next to me with these Civic Si!! They have these huge pipes on these cars and then they try to race me. I smoke their boots!!! Hell, my killer Stang only used 3inch exhaust with 3.5 inch muffler!! Why the fuck would these little 4bangers need a sewer pipe??

CANTGETLAYED,I used to own a place called
THE SAINTS 4WHEEL DRIVE AND SPEED SHOP.
Maverick is on the right path. Your best bet with a 4 cyl. engine is to turbocharge it.
You can also go with nitrous, but it's hard on a 4cyl engines lower end.

How does everybody keep their cars running?

All that HP. Where do you find that high octane gas that needs to be fed all the time?

Well, for my turbocharged car that I am hoping to build, I will be running 92 octane pump gas and running low boost settings on the street which would only give it around 250 horsepower. But when I go to the track, I will crank up the boost and throw in some race fuel or spike it with some octane booster which will hopefully put me over 350 horsepower. High horsepower cars can be just as reliable as economy cars if the engine is built and tuned right and the driver takes good care of it with regular maintenace. Just like with anything else it is all about how you care for it. Also ignition timing and fuel maps play a big role in reliabilty on pump gas. Turbo cars can run pretty good on pump gas if the ignition timing is adjusted properly and the fuel map is designed to keep the fuel ratios consistant and a little on the rich side. For instance, I could still run my car on high boost settings if I retarded the ignition timing properly.

And to whoever said you need a SR20DET in a 240sx to have a fast import, I have to disagree. I considered that swap but then found out that the KA24DE that is in my car now has the potential for much greater overall torque and horsepower when properly built. I really don't want to give up that extra .4 liters of displacement. There is one guys car on the net in particular that I know of who built up his 240 sx engine and had it dynoed at over 350 horsepower at the wheels which equates to well over 400 at the flywheel. But it would be great if the US versions came with the SR20DET like the Japan 240's (Known as the Silvia or 180SX
over there) do.
